2nd Vitreous Detachment

I had small, definite, round floaters that happened when I was outside. I started noticing the circular flashes on the left outside periphery of my left eye. My right eye had a vitreous detachment 4 years ago. I made an overdue optometry appointment the next day, surprisingly on the next day. They did the retina scan where you look at the blue light shaped like a equilateral cross. the optometrist said that my left eye now had a vitreous detachment and that my brain would learn to ignore the floaters. He did not say anything about the flashes but I have not seen those in my right eye for a while. Him and others have said there is no operation or medicine for a vitreous detachment. I have not pursued that. Feel free to comment. Thanks.

Another note: There is a comic strip (single panel) in the USA call "Pluggers". It used to pertain to working class people now it relates to the elderly. Today's Plugger was "" you know you're a plugger when you try to clean your glasses and realize it is your eyes" (that are hazy).

Hello Hughmidor,

Have you been diagnosed with a PVD? I have copied a link to some related information that may be of assistance:

gosh I wish your optomotrist actually used the right words to avoid confusion.!

So it sounds like a PVD posterior vitreous detachment. Thee are common and more likely with those with short sightedness caused by a thinner retina ( longer eye). This would initially cause floaters and maybe a few flashes but once detaabed then there is no risk. The problem comes if it’s not detached completely and it pulls on the retina so I was advised no heavy lifting and try to avoid bending down. Mine was fine. A vitreous detachment not posterior is a different thing and can be rectified with surgery called a vitrectomy.
