HI All, just thought it was a good idea to post after I read this worrying article on contaminated eye drops, the particular brands are in the US, as a user of preservative free eye drops everyday for my dry eyes, it was a good reminder to ensure I keep them clinically clean and use them only for short periods of time. I use Hylo Fresh made by URsapharm.
I make sure I always open new eyed drops after eye injections.
See the link to see the brands that have been recalled.
Thanks for posting, i havn't heard anything about eyedrops being recalled here, i use Hylotears about 3-4 times a day...i'm thinking of having a change as i don't get a lot of relief frofrom them now , i've been using them a couple of yrs...will cercertainly check with doc x
hi JJnan, thanks for your response I’m pretty sure most brands in the U.K. are safe, I use Hylo preservative free, but I notice they have gel range that may give you more comfort, I have used them too, they are a good producer and are manufactured in Germany, Herve is the link. I hope you find a good alternative, have you dry eyes too?
Interesting - you'd think it would be easy enough to test the eye drops for contamination, it's many years since I did microbiology 101, but Pseudomonas aeruginosa seemed very easy to culture - which of course is the problem.
I agree, they say there are no antibiotics to counteract this infection, when I contracted Endophthalmitis they were very concerned it’s wasn’t this, We just have to be very hygienic around our eyes. I hope all is well with you .
I just want to add that, from what I have heard here in the US, the contamination was caused by cracks in the plastic screw-on tops of
the little eye drop containers. We would probably all be well advised to examine these. I have been using single dose lubricant eye drops instead - perhaps safer? However, I do use eye drops for pressure control which come in the conventional containers with screw-on tops.
hi Jihm, thanks for letting us know, it is worth checking, I agree we need to choose and then check eye drops are safe to use, yes the individual drops are good too, hoping you are progressing well in the the US.
