Dry eye: Hi all. I have chronic csr plus wet... - Macular Society
Dry eye
I have switched to the systane gel drops because the reg drops were not helping my dry eyes the gel works great
Hi! I am having the same issues with severe pain at night. Are you using the systane night time gel ointment or the systane lubricant eye gel? Thanks so much!
Drink lots of liquids. No caffeine. Avoid fans or air moving across your eyes causing them to dry. Humidifier. Get treatment for any allergy or sinus conditions. I have same conditions as you but possibly not as severe. My dry eye problems are better right now bit I cannot say why. Hope some of these will help.
Hi, you could try theoloz duo. I find them really good.
I use Hylotear drops. Four times a day. Thicker than hypromellose, easy push dispenser, and bottle lasts 6 months once opened ( though I open new one after inj). I'm in UK and gp gives it me on prescription.
I use a microwaveable heat pad on my eyes once a day for seven minutes. This encourages the tear glands to work. I find that along with eye drops it really helps. My optician suggested I do this several years ago and I've continued.
Works really well for me!
Dry eye at night is particularly dreadful! I use Thealoz Duo Gel (preservative free) - comes in single dose units, so very handy for use in the day if necessary. A drop before bed and then during the night if I wake, all OK in the morning.
If you have injections (I have eylea) have you ever had a reaction to iodine?
I find all hints & tips worth considering!🙂
I was told that we suffer more at night due to rapid eye movement - which occurs during ‘deep’ sleep.
Systane seems to be the choice by most of eye doctors. But, my optometrist said to definitely use PRESERVATIVE FREE drops. You can use them as often as needed. When Systane is overused, it makes the condition worse.
Having worked with dry eye condition for many years and having it myself (I have just seen the consultant) I feel qualified to make an up to the minute comment.
Do use microwaveable heat pads several times a day if possible. Cover with a clean tissue and be careful not to burn yourself. A clean hot flannel will work too. When you remove the heat pad use a clean finger tip on the base of your eyelashes to ‘squeeze’ the pink bit of the eye lid against the eyeball in small movements. All along this pink bit (inside the eyelashes) are little invisible oil glands. If you have dry eyes these glands are blocked and need to be unblocked so that the oil can mix with the tears as they should do. This might take months of gentle but firm work. This is why dry eyes are so often pouring with tears - but not the right mix of tears.
Definitely use eye drops without preservatives but throw away after a month. Pharmacists can help you choose which drops to use. Blink a lot, especially if you are in front of a screen.
Good luck!
Totally agree with you, heat pads really improve dry eye condition. I don’t use them for a few days after injections. Instead I use preservative free eye drops every hour or so and the week prior to an injection I also up the use of the heat pad and drops. As I don’t tolerate iodine well and need to have my eyes washed with saline I find that this routine works very well for me.
