I have posted before about being given anaesthetic drops to cope with post injection pain. It is quite miraculous how they work so well. Certainly in my case. I have been receiving injection for my wet AMD for nearly 2 years now, apart from a brief rest. I had tried all possible advise to mitigate post injection pain. Nothing worked, until the clinic gave me a tiny vial of anaesthetic drops to take home; and I have subsequently checked with my Consultant that this was OK.
He agreed that as well as the antibiotic drops + soothing drops the clinic dispense, I can have the few drops of anaesthetic to dispense t home.
I am so pleased to report this. (I had previously been prevented by a nurse, not the Consultant, from having the drops. Now all is well. My eye was stinging like crazy when I got home: I left it as long as I could, and then administered the drops. Immense relief! Now I don't have to go and lie down in a darkened room, pilled up to the eyeballs- (sorry- to no avail.

Must be a relief for you to know you can have the drops after each injection to take home. It will take a lot of your anxiety away. Your consultant sounds very understanding. Hopefully others on here who suffer the same will be able to follow your lead. My eye pain afterwards varies but isn't too bad. It's more the blurry misty vision I get for a while afterwards that unnerves me.
Also, I have never been offered antibiotic drops or soothing drops afterwards. I don't think this is offered at my eye clinic. Is this standard procedure at yours. I am in the north of England. 2468G
It's always been standard procedure to receive antibiotic drops post injections. The soothing or lubricating drops have been introduced recently. Could be because I've been so vocal about my post injection pain? Yes, my consultant is very kind and understanding. Thank you for your reply.
I am going to ask about the antibiotic drops and the soothing drops next time I have an injection. If there are things available to ease the discomfort afterwards then I would like to take advantage of them.
In 2014, studies determined that antibiotic drops were not needed or effective. No difference between those people who got them and those who didn't. I've recieved injections for over a year. I have never received antibiotic drops. The clinic does put in a soothing lubricant and advises me to.have my own at home- using every couple hours. I am in Minnesota, USA.
Hi, I don’t get them either but I do use Oxyal as an eye soother as I am on lots of glaucoma meds and have occasional injections too. It’s available over the counter as well as on prescription and is much better (for me) than any other eye lubricant that I have tried.
