Macular disease and pregnancy

I’m not sure if anyone can help . After a bleed in my eye at the age of 35 I was diagnosed with pathological myopia . My eyes have been stable for 2 years now and I am no longer under Moorfields hospital . I am now pregnant and my mum who has lost her sight to AMD. Has warned me that she got told she should have no more children after me because of her eye problems and that should have had a C section . She has now worried me that child birth Could cause more bleeds in my eye making me blind . I spoke to my midwife but she just dismissed it and said that they don’t get you to push these days but I’m now still really worried , but not sure who to contact to get further advice. Can anyone advise ??? Thank you

I have pathological myopia also. I had a c-section (not by choice) and I am glad it turned out that way because of my high myopia. If you have eye issues, consult with your doctor re natural delivery vs c section as to what is safe for you. I had all kinds of eye issues thru the years including injections but thank God, things are quiet now. I wish you the best and congrats.

Hi, definitely ask your ophthalmologist as our eyes are all so different. I had my children naturally before I had I had any awareness of my pathological myopia and before the bleeds, but after two retinal detachments. All was fine, but years later a midwife friend did question why I wasn’t offered sections. Congratulations, how exciting! 😀

I have a different eye conditions-chorodial osteoma which essentially ends up with leaking blood vessels like wet macular degeneration. I have 3 sons ages 4-9 years old. During my first pregnancy I developed sub retinal bleeding around week 36 which necessitated a c section as to not increase the pressure by pushing. And I needed the injection ASAP so they delivered him the next day (1 month early) so I could go on to get the injection later that day. The doctor would not give me lucentis while I was pregnant. The second birth was a c section after failed induction. I only got to 6 cm dialated and babe didn’t tolerate labor any longer. The final pregnancy resulted in a healthy uncomplicated vaginal delivery. My eyes were stable during my second two pregnancies, however I did develop a bleed in my “good eye” after the vaginal birth. Hard to say if it was related to giving birth or not. But I would do it again in a heartbeat
