Betadine prep

Does anyone have a reaction to the betadine prep. My eye lid swells almost shut and the dragging feeling is almost unbearable. My pain tolerance is high but this pushes the limit.

Numerous patients report asking to have the Betadine diluted 50% and/or having the area washed very thoroughly.

I am allergic to iodine so they do not use betadine. Sounds like you could be too! Take care.

Dear Codeblack7

This is not an uncommon problem, as this antiseptic used as a protective cleansing agent prior to injections, contains iodine to which people can be allergic.

You can read more in our Factsheet about Pain after Injections which is here on our website:

It is important to discuss with your doctor or practitioner who is treating you so that they may use alternative products.

Oh yes! Wish I could attach a picture of what Betadine does to me. Shots were so painful I could hardly stand it but that was only the beginning. The swelling was immediate - eye totally closed within hours - horrible itching, numerous floaters, constant tearing but the pain was the worse part and it lasted for days. About the third shot, I finally realized it wasn't just the procedure but clearly an allergy because itchy, swollen eyes also happen when I am exposed to petroleum products. I saw my dermatologist who asked my retina specialist for every component of my injection. Long story short, it was the Betadine! Stopped using it immediately and I have had no reaction since! Still painful injection, though, but my doctor retired and his replacement uses an entirely different numbing method so I now have no problems with the procedure or the aftermath. I hope you can change to a different antiseptic - best wishes and let us know if that worked for you.

Hello Code black,

I am so sorry to learn about your painful experience.

Please see the following factsheet about pain after injections;

macularsociety.org/sites/de...

It it likely that you have an allergy to the iodine eye wash which you must report to your eye clinic as injections should not be painful.

I hope that this is helpful.

Best wishes
