Hi Sandbird, macular degeneration is not a painful condition. I suspect that your mum may have a condition know as 'dry eyes'. There are drops and other medications available which can alleviate the situation. Her optician or GP should be able to advise her. The Macular Society have a factsheet on 'Dry Eyes'; to obtain a copy, please email help@macularsociety.org. If she is very down, apart from our group network and telephone befriending service, which I mentioned in another forum post to you, we also have a telephone counselling service. To access the telephone counselling service you should ask your mum to call the society helpline on 0300 30 30 111. Please see our information booklet on the subject called 'The Emotional Impact of Sight Loss' (emotional Impact), at the following link;

Hi, my eyes get sore and painful as well, I have wet in one eye and dry in the other. I also cry and feel isolated , I know that depression is a very real effect of any disability esp. with MD, perhaps a visit to the Dr. would be in order.

I am not in the UK but am 61 so she might feel ok corresponding with someone of my age. Let me know if she would like to hear from me.
