Has anyone had Omeprazole suggested when taking prednisolone long term?

My new GP suggested this today as I have been taking prednisolone for 3 years. He also suggested I run it past my new rheumy next week. This is the first time I have heard of this - just wondered if it has been suggested to anyone else?

I have been taking Omeprazole for years, it is just a gut protector which also helps if you take lots of pain killers too.

I have been on prednisolone and omeprozole for six years. If I don't take omeprozole I get terrible stomoch pains so I find it beneficial

I have been taking omeprazole for years, because of taking lots of pain relief and prednisalone, it protects your stomach, from all the drugs harming you x

Hi Sue & Lucy-May...Thank you both so much for this information. It sounds like a good idea then. My new GP is obviously very on the ball which is good. I will definitely mention it to the rheumy next week. Thank you!x

Yes

My GP prescribed it about 6 months ago after being on steriods for 8 years- it has help me enornmously with heartburn, esposides of stomache upsets (vomiting and diarrohea), I wish I had been prescibed it years ago! Hold on to that GP!

Hi Deadasadodo...I love your name! Thank you for this. Funnily enough I have been getting some heartburn recently. I have been on steroids for 3 years. I didn't go in to ask for anything but a repeat of prescription as part of a new patient procedure....I was impressed by this...obviously worth taking. I wonder why my rheumy has never suggested it. It sounds like something we should all take if you have taken steroids for a long time.

Just a little point....(although your on-the-ball GP may have already said this). Take the Omeprazole (Zoton) BEFORE meals/medication - this will help your stomach lining to cope better. It is a marvellous drug, in that it heals as well as protects, and with little or no side effects in the long term.

Woops...Lansoprazole is Zoton, but virtually the same thing....

I took omeprazole for 18 months but then stopped when I needed to see if I had a gastric ulcer. In fact my stomach problems improved! I no longer take it. I hope that it works for you.

i have been taken 80mg of omeprazole for the past 7 years i have gastro esophageal reflux disease which gets bad alot of the time & this is the only thing that helps me it took along time for them to work it out what i had over the past 3weeks i've had 9 small attacks because of the stomach acid & one very bad attack.

Hi I have been on pred for nine years and used to get terrible heartburn and felt too uncomfortable and sick to eat in the mornings. I have been on omeprazole for ages and it is brilliant. If I forget to take it boy do I know about it by late afternoon - the heartburn is back.

Are you already on a calcium supplement? If not that would be another thing to ask for, as long term steroids strips the calcium from your bones.

Hi I take lansoprazole which I think is same thing. The rheumy didn't put me on it my GP did once he know that the plan was to keep me on low dose steroids permanently. He also put me on calcium and vitamin d, the steroids can affect your stomach and can cause weak bones so for prevention he started me on these drugs, don't know why the rheumys don't do it.

in reply toannie330

Your GP is 'on it' - maintaining the health and well being of their patient. Well done annie30's GP! This is the way the system is supposed to work.

To get the most benefit out of OMEPRAZOLE (delayed release caplet form) take dose a minimum of 30 minutes prior to a meal on an empty stomach.

OMEPRAZOLE is commonly prescribed for prevention/protection of the gastrointestinal tract.

When on long term steroids or other medications the gastrointestinal tract is challenged. Better to protect/prevent if at all possible.

Thank you all SO VERY MUCH for all the replies on this. I feel reading all the replies I should have been given this ages ago. I will definitely mention it to my new rheumy next week - perhaps he will be more on the ball than my last one. I am relieved that my new GP knows what he is talking about! Yes, I have been taking Vit D & calcium - thank you for thinking about this too. x

I would be lost without it! There are other version (Lanzoprozole etc) which basically do the same thing too. My Dr calls it 'a tummy liner' - hope it helps! x

Thank you for letting me know. I seem to be the only one who is not taking it - not sure if this reflects on my GP or rheumy!x

I have been on prednisolone for 7 years and have had omeprazole 20mg for most of that time.
