My elderly dog was prescribed glucosaminoglycans (green lipped mussel product) as an anti-inflammatory for her painful joints. It has helped her.

Be certain to consult with your doctor/s when taking any supplement or over the counter remedy to avoid cross reaction or improper usage/dosage.

Research the origin of your supplements/remedies as best as is possible. Many contain toxins and are not regulated.

Many thanks, that's really helpful. I will check with my GP.

I actually came across this supplement when I spoke to my dog breeder as the vet says that she has to have a hip replacement (she is only 13 months) and he was quite adamant that she shouldn't have it. I had a look and wondered whether I should try it too. :)

Hi Nouska, I've just had a reply from Nurse Angie at St Thomas' Lupus Clinic as follows:-

"Musseltone Green Lipped Mussel Extract comes from mussels found in unpolluted waters in New Zealand which should make this product safe to take. Fish Oils are generally beneficial. The only caution I would have against taking this extract would be if you are allergic to shell fish or if you were pregnant. It should not interact with Hydroxychloroquine and prednisolone.

It is just worth mentioning that lupus patients do tend to be “allergic”, so I would advise a gradual introduction to make sure that you have no adverse reaction. YOu must not stop taking your Hydroxychloroquuine. "

Reckon I'll give it a go, I'll let you know.

I found rosehip very beneficial for my joint pain and mobility. I can even knit again when not having a flare.
