Neuropathy treatments?

Hi everyone,

I have been dealing with widespread neuropathy symptoms for a while now. My arms, hands, legs, feet, face, and mouth often itch, burn, tingle, have pins and needles, and mild numbness (not fully numb, but headed there). As I am typing this I have been scratching my arms and face like crazy, it’s so painful and uncomfortable. Any suggestions for getting this a bit under control? It makes hard to even think. Also, can neuropathy symptoms come and go? Thanks!

Ever try Gabapenton? Ask your doc.

Yes I second that try Gabapenton takes a while for it to start working but once it does it’ll bring huge relief. 😊

Have you experienced many side effects? My doctor has mentioned Gabapentin for me but I’m quite frightened of side effects (due to some nasty experiences with medication in the past). I think I need to get brave and try it because these neuropathy symptoms are quite awful. ☹️

I am Gabapentin and Amytriptylin

I’m thinking it’s time to try Gabapentin. I’ll admit I’ve been avoiding it for awhile now. Medications make me nervous because I tend to not react very well to a lot of them.

I have been on it for 9years now. When my foot pain or headache get worse they increase it and I reduce it when I feel better. I have been referred to a neurophysiology consultant. I don't know what he will do but the doctor that did my nerves test didn't give me any hope of things getting better. I pray you get the help you need.

Have you had your Vitamin B 12 tested recently?Low or deficient levels of this can increase Neuropathy symptoms and itchy skin among many other symptoms.

Have you had your kidney and liver function and electrolytes checked and been tested for a possible urinary or kidney infection ?

These issues can also increase Neuropathy and cause skin itching .

Have you been checked for low or Deficient Vitamin D and Folates levels?

You can request all these tests from your GP if you have ongoing issues to rule out the causes .

Have you started any new medications , supplements, or started using any new creams or lotions either medical or beauty related ?

Vitamin B12 each time it’s checked is fine. I do take B12 daily. I haven’t had kidney or liver function tested for awhile now. I have to take a higher dosage of vitamin D daily but have been doing this for awhile now so those levels are normal too, I believe Folate is also normal. I haven’t started any new medications, supplements, or any new creams or lotions.

I can very well understand why you may be wary of adding yet another medication such as Gabapentin. You may look into EMS (electro stimulation). I think it is also called TENS. I understand many pain clinics use this as well as physio therapy clinics. Worth looking into. You may try it with a therapist first and then buy your own machine (Amazon sells German maker product for about £150). Hope that helps.
