Swollen Knee and Bruising/Sensation

Hi everyone,

I have APS and Lupus SLE (taking warfarin and hydroxychloroquine).

I have posted about this before as I was worried it was a clot. It wasn’t a clot but the problem persists. I get swelling behind both knees but my left knee swells on the sides too and goes a purple shade and I get bruises around that area too. My left leg also constantly feels kind of tender inside with like a buzzing feeling and it wakes me up in the night and I have to move it.

I have seen 3 specialists about it (during my APS and Lupus appointments) and they are all puzzled what it could be but don’t really seem to want to investigate it until I push.

I had an MRI which was clear and now a CT scan has been ordered and an ECG but they don’t think it’s heart related as my ankles don’t swell.

Does anyone have any suggestions what tests I could ask for to get to the bottom of it? Or does anyone have the same problem?

Thanks

B

Hi Bobbydoodle

So sorry to hear about your knees ... we’ve got enough to worry about without those playing up🙄.

I don’t get the swelling behind but I do get it to the sides . They go purple and look bruised over knee cap .

I had them xrayed last week but no results yet .

I know this sounds bit odd but worth a decent physio having a look.. good ones are very knowledgeable and sometimes have links with local hospitals and consultants ?

My Gp is very young and he didn’t have a clue so I went to physio who said it’s swelling within the tissues nothing to do with knee . Go tell gp 😁. My ankles don’t swell either .

The night time thing is v annoying isn’t it ? I take Amitriplin and I do think it helps a bit with the knee pain .

Sorry I’ve not been much help ! If you get any further with it please let us know .

Take care 🙏

I have aps and lupus and I’m on warfarin. I did sometimes get bruising behind my knees. But not on the sides. I discovered (by myself) that when I was sitting, especially on a hard chair, that I was pressing my legs against the edge of the chair. I have long legs and since school days have tucked my feet under the chair to keep them out of the way. I was then sitting a bit forward and there was a lot of pressure from the edge of the chair causing blood vessels to break presumably and cause the bruising.

Probably no help to you at all, but maybe an idea to think about what happens to that area during your day and could you be causing the bruising by something you do. For instance, do you sit back on your heels on the floor which would squash the blood vessels in that area and could cause bleeding?

Sorry if I’m not much help. I hope you find the answer soon xx
