Hyperparathyroidism

Hi everyone,

I was wondering has anyone suffered with hyperparathyroidism. I was diagnosed with this a while back. I have developed very high anxiety levels and suicidal thoughts. The slightest stress stimuli causes high anxiety and panic. I feel sure this is due to my parathyroid problems as my reaction is so ott and getting worse. I have read that this is a common symptom with hyparathyroidism

I was due to have a scan in prep for an operation to have it removed, however it is now delayed due to covid.

I was wandering if anyone has had any experience of this.

Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Hi field. I’m so sorry to hear about the delays managing your hyperparathyroidism and the anxiety and suicidal thoughts. My mother had the operation and I do remember her struggling with her mood while waiting for the operation. It varied with her calcium levels - have yours been checked recently? It can be treated with medication while you wait for the op so really worth pushing to get the level retested and reviewed. Important to drink loads in the meantime. Vit D is recommended, and adequate calcium intake, believe it or not, and “mobilisation” (exercise), all so as not to lose bone density. Can you get your GP to review you? My mum’s GP managed to get her pushed up the waiting list and made urgent for everything. Hope you’ve got support and can get this sorted soon. Take care.

You have given me some very good information. I have a virtual rhumy app tomorrow and will discuss the management you have suggested with him during my consultation.
