Hello,

I have had SLE since 2006. I take hydroxychlorquine and prednisiolone. I am photosenstive. Since menopause my facial hair is growing very fast. I have been told i cannot have LASER hair removal due to lupus and also due to the hydroxychloroquine...as i amy suffer pigmentation.

Does anybody have any experience with this ?

Thank you

Hi ritu71uk, sorry to hear about this and I hope it isn't getting you down too much. I can't say I can relate to being in the Menopause as I am 28, however being on steroids has caused me to grow quite a lot of facial hair also! Also on hydroxychloroquine. So instead of laser I have 'dermaplaning' and it removes all the unwanted hair off my face, plus leaves the skin feeling super soft. It normally lasts about 6 weeks for me and then start noticing regrowth so does need staying on top of but at about £35 a time, I don't think it's too bad. Cheaper than laser and I've never had any problems with it. Don't know if this helps but just thought I'd share my experience. Good luck xx

Thank you for your reply and your kind words. I agree the steroids brought on facial hair growth which meant i had to have waxing every 2-3 weeks. Now because of menopause the hair growth is even quicker which means i have to find time and money to wax every 10 days or so.

I will look into your treatment for sure...at least its only an appt every 6 week.

I really appreciate that you took time to reply.Thank you

Wish you lots of luck with your health !!!

You are more than welcome, I find it is a little less aggressive on the skin than waxing for me as well.....the trick is to find a good therapist who does a thorough job and doesn't rip you off, which can be quite a challenge in itself haha!! But it is horrible having hair on the face as a woman and people, especially doctors, don't always seem to appreciate the psychological effect and the costs/time involved to simply feel a bit more like 'yourself'!

Wishing you all the luck and good health also! :)

Hello;

I am a guy so I can’t answer this question from experience. However, with Lupus and if you have skin issues and you are photosensitive, I would definitely not recommend it. Nor would I recommend waxing.

I have just the opposite of you, due to Lupus, methotrexate and other medication. I have lost all of my body hair everywhere, and the hair on my head is thinning very rapidly.

Hope this helps you?

Thank you for your reply.

I have not had any problems with waxing.

Actually yes my head hair is thinning but my facial hair is growing quicker. It's probably a variety of reasons inc. Menopause.

Thanks for your advice.

Best of luck with your health

Hi have just read your post I too have started with the problems with facial hair yet the hair on my head is thinning. Plus my eyebrows and eyelashes have turned turned white so I have to get them dyed constantly but if you try facial threading it’s very effective. I haven’t done about once a month. If your also photosensitive try looking at factor 90 suncream from Korea or factor 65 from America. I can’t remember the brand names but if I have a look online I can find them for you. It’s not easy being a woman and there’s a lot of pressure to look good amd well groomed 24/7. I hope you have a great week. Take care. Cheers. Elena.

Thank you.

Lots of threading places near me...sounds painful but will try it.

I have lots of options thanks to lots of replies. Might disregard laser all together.

Thanks again. Best wishes

I have Lupus and other autoimmune issues and take Hydroxy. I have also had IPL (intense pulsed light) and laser for bad rosacea (both machines deliver light outwith the UV range) - on the NHS, having been referred by a consultant . So, unless your consultant has told you this for a reason particular to your case e.g. you are highly light intolerant and also react to wavelengths outwith UV, then I would question this advice. If it is a private cosmetic/laser clinic that has told you this, then it is probably due to a condition within their their public liability insurance. Not all clinics operate the same contra-indications, however, so it's worth looking around.

Hello and thank you for replying. Yes it's a private clinic. I think they had a list of conditions and medicines that you won't treat. I am seeing my consultation on 28th may so will ask and maybe obtain a covering letter. I might be more prone to pigmentation as I have brown skin. I'll ask him.

I think your ipl and the laser I'm particularly interested in (soprano ice ) operate in the same wavelength so it's useful to know about your experience.

Thanks again. My best wishes for your good health.
