Hi Ctamone

Hair loss can be due to the illness flaring, side effects of drugs or your body adjusting to new drug doses or can be caused by stress!. It can also be an auto-immune condition on it's own alopecia so your hospital docs are not being helpful refusing your GP's blood request. I hope it improves as it's tough losing our hair!X

When you're on methotrexate for RA the doctors prescribe folic acid to help slow the hair loss. It might be worth checking with your GP to see if you can try that. There are also Redkin shampoos for thinning hair which are nice.

Hi Ctamone,

I'm sorry to hear of your hairloss. It can certainly hit your self esteem pretty harshly. Firstly, great information from the other posts. I have also suffered hairloss on and off for the past 17 years. I have also been privy to enjoy candy floss hair, followed by hair changing colour (from dark blonde to spontaneously going dark brown, then to "scrubber blonde"), then hair changed texture to wirey and easily broke. Recently it has gone granny gray with some thinning patched at the temples but much thicker on top and and the back.I was only diagnosed with lupus about 18 months ago and on plaquenil. I had been trying to grow my hair for 18 years without any luck. I have spent thousands at the hairdressers and on the best salon products I could get my hands on. Still my hair fell out and still I could not grown my hair. I decided to do quite a lot of research on growing long hair and this is what I did. You may find itdramatically outke a really good look at your scalp and check for any abnormalities (dandruff, ringworm etc) and address these issues first. Hair wont grow with a poor scalp condition.

2) check out your hair styling tools. Are your brushes clean and free of dead hair? What sort of condition are your brushes in? Brushes that have the ends bobbled and looking rough, throw out the brush. The little rough ends on your brush will pull and stress your hair. You will need at least a wide tooth comb, a vent brush, and round brush that dont have nylon bristles. It's the 21st century and we blow dry our hair. Heat melts nylon. Now this was the hardest, place ALL hot styling tools away (ghd included) and dont use them. Dont panic youll only lose more hair ;). Check your hair colour. If you're bleaching your hair, you will need to stop. Make a deal with yourself that if you can get your hair to a certain length (somewhere past shoulders) then you can treat yourself to some highlights. Switch to semi permanents which will add colour and shine.switch to natural products. I have actually found Wen product to be great and it dramatically reduced hair loss. I wasnt that keen on the fragrance so I swap it up with shampoo and conditioner from Justice. Justice is amazing containing real silk protein that wraps around the hair and makes it strong. I also use their leave in moisturizer. I use argan oil daily and once a week I leave almond oil in my hair overnight. I stopped washing my hair everyday. Hair is most fragile when wet as it stretches, it can break. I only use low heat setting on my hairdryer. I cover my hair when possible. I found over winter wearing a knitted beanie that it rubbed and broke my hair :(. Also I eat a healthy diet and include nuts and protein. I changed hairdressers and only went to just cuts so the hairdresser couldnt talk me in to yet another chemical colour which would wreck all my efforts to grow my hair. I limited myself to 2 haircuts per year. Yes this is hard. Personally I always found super hard. I changed my hair bands to soft scruchies. I critically looked at other hairbands claiming to be "snag free" and have no metal join but the amount of grip it had on my hair broke it. Also I stopped using all metal clips in my hair. Im seeing such an improvement :). Also as a word of advice, don't cut your hair really short as if you get a thinning or complete bald parch you wont be able to use the longer hair to cover it. Yes its the Ladies Combover but done with style obviously (not like donald trump). Hope this helps. Keep smiling x
