Hi has any one managed to get rid of excess weight gained by taking steroids and other weight gaining medications and if possible how ? Also is it possible to lose weight while still on steroids ? I have gained approx 3-4 stone in 3 years since my diagnosis ,illness and lack of mobility , I am now a good size 20 - feel very down and would love to get some self confidence back regarding self image ! Appreciate any help offered x

Dear JL1w,

I understand you! This is such a difficult question to answer. There are two aspects here: first the weight loss issue and I would suggest you ask your GP to refer you to a nutritionist because this is not a straight forward matter. You need to be "healthy" which doesn't necessarily correlate with weight, especially for those on corticosteroids.

The second aspect, is how you feel about yourself. Of course, if your body has changed - as mine has done - this is bound to affect you. But, it's not just about body shape. It's about loss (not weight loss) but about how you feel about yourself, of which the weight issue is a physical aspect.

Lupus affects all of us - body & mind. It's understandable and "normal" to feel anxiety, depression. In fact, not to feel depressed or anxious at some point, would be even more worrying because it would mean either brain inflammation (see Dr David Isenberg) or you are very detached from yourself.

It might be an idea to think about seeing someone to talk to about what has happened to you. Although only one person in the family may have SLE, the whole family suffers, or is affected, including relationships.

It is very important to know that you are not alone.

If you want to talk more, please contact me privately.

With good wishes,

Ros

Dear JL - my weight was steadily rising (without steroids) then I was told yet again to reduce my sugar intake or risk diabetes. I scoffed but cut out bread, cakes and biscuits. It worked. Within 2 days I was less bloated, 3 months later and I have lost weight and off the risk level. Before the weight loss my clothes began to feel more comfy, I had more energy and my awful skin looked better. It is a slow method but really works. I found it hard for a few days but once the result showed it became easier. I also do not eat after 7pm, but if still hungry only eat protein. I don’t diet, have just changed my eating. I hope you will think about this method. There is so much sugar in our diets it is awful. I am not young so to lose weight is a thrill and I intend to eat this way in future. Good luck

I can’t believe I was just coming on here to write the same question. I just had my steroids increased for yet another flare. I haven’t been off them for a very long time. The weight gain is real.

I have seen a nutritionist but just looking for any little tips that could help or motivate, thanks for posting. Maybe we can motivate each other.

I am planning on getting out my small weights and also eating a piece of fruit before meals. I need to feel “me” again!

Not what you're looking for?
