Hi, my dad has had most of 1 of his lung removed around xmas time. Unfortunately, his cancer has spread to his vertebrae and they are unable to cure it. He is fairly stable at the mo and would like some physio to help improve his breathing and fitness however the hospital are unable to provide as he is now deemed palliative. Are there any other avenues we can explore re post surgery physio that anyone else has used?

Many thanks.

Hi seagulls123,

Thanks for getting in touch with the forum. Sorry to hear of your dad's lung cancer diagnosis and the recent progression of his disease. Have you discussed this with his lung cancer clinical nurse specialist (CNS) if he has one? They may be able to advise, or advocate on your dad's behalf to request some advice from the physio team regarding some breathing exercises for example.

I'm not sure where you are located, but if there is a local cancer information centre, such as a Maggie's centre, they may have groups where people can attend to help with physical exercise and breathing techniques. Have a look at maggies.org/our-centres/

Your dad's GP may be able to advise, and the palliative care team may be able to offer techniques and exercises to help too. If he has not yet been referred, the GP or cancer team can refer him to palliative care.

I hope some others on this group may be able to offer up suggestions also.

Our free Ask The Nurse helpline is available Monday to Thursday 9am – 5pm and Fridays 9am – 4pm. If you would like to discuss anything further, about treatments, symptoms or just a chat, we would be very happy to talk to you. Tel: 0800 358 7200.

Best wishes
