What are the most common symptoms of lung cancer?

Hi all, I'm really sorry if I offend anyone with my post. I'm really worried I have lung cancer, basically I've had this cough for around 2/3 years and the constant feeling of phlegm stuck at the back of my throat which I have to hack up to get out, but then comes back straight away. The last few months I have lost around 9 pound in weight. I have been working extra long hours and not able to eat as much as I normally do but I can't see how losing that much weight would be possible. I have also started getting chest pains, pains in my arms. I always feel tired, but when I'm working I don't feel as tired, only when I start driving or sit down etc I also feel lathargic. I also get a weird sharp pain in my chest when I breath in, which I've had for the same amount of time I've had my cough. But it's not that often I get that pain. I went to the doctors a few months ago and was told I wouldn't have it and there is nothing to worry about. But I've gone into panic mode since I've lost the weight. Just wondering if anyone can give me some advice. Thank you for reading this.

did you have an x-ray or scam or anything? If not get a 2nd opinion straight away. A lot of what your describing conks also be anxiety. No-one here can diagnose you one way or another!! You are clearly very worried so you really must get some answers. at the very least go back to your doctors and push for x-rays or scans!!

I hope it all works out for you!!

No didn't have anything like that, she just listened to my chest and said nothing is wrong as doesn't know why I'm getting these symptoms, even went as far to say that she couldn't justify me going for a scan and that exposure to radiation can cause it. I've changed doctor now anyways, so soon as I can get time off work I'm going to ask for a scan or something. I do suffer with anxiety. Have done for years, but didn't realise it could bring on these type of symptoms days after thinking about them, in all honesty the pains became more intense when I Googled my symptoms. Thanks for your reply. I really do appreciate it.

I would go back to your GP and tell him your symptoms. All of the above could be worsened by stress and anxiety and the cough/phlegm could be a respiratory or chest infection. Going into panic mode as you state will make things worse generally. Pain in the arms and chest could also be symptoms of other things (lung cancer doesn't' affect the arms) Losing the weight could be very possible especially if as you admit you've not been eating as much as usual. I didn't lose any weight at all in fact I gained it yet had lung cancer. I'd go to your doctor to get help and if it is made worse by anxiety, he may refer you for counselling as well as it is clearly getting you down. good luck.

Dear Benji123

Welcome to the forum, and sorry to hear of your worry with your symptoms, which may continue until you get some answers. There has been good advice from the responses that you have had, of which we would also encourage you to go to your GP to be re assessed, even if it is nothing physical and may be anxiety then it would be good to address this.

I have placed a link below on symptoms of anxiety which may help you see a pattern of symptoms that you have been having.

This link from NHS provides some guidance in reducing anxiety levels:

Though many of your symptoms could be caused by anxiety and overwork, there could also be a medical reason for some of them. Do go back and request, or demand if you must, a chest xray or scan and any other tests your doctor believes necessary. Lung cancer often cannot be heard. You need to have your concerns dealt with. Once you know, and if you still feel anxious, some antianxiety medication might be helpful.

I hope this helps and that you get the information you need.
