For me that book would be The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. It led to an addiction for all things Middle Earth.
Later when my mom complained that my youngest brother couldn't write a paragraph she asked me to work with him. It was apparent that he hadn't read much either, so we worked on paragraph structure. That Christmas I gave him The Hobbit and the Ring Trilogy. The cover illustration of the "Battle of Five Armies" caught his imagination and he read it and kept on reading.
Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen. I can still feel the opening line..."I had a farm in Africa..." The movie was a bust - as movies often are when a book is complicated and wonderful. The book sparked my love of her prose and I chased down other writings
The only book I have ever read that stayed with me was The Shack. I read the book a few years before I saw the movie. The book was really good, the movie was a disappointment.
I'm with you Denzie. The Hobbit was the first book to come to mind! I was 18 years old, in a bad marriage and far from family. One of the women I babysat for suggested it. The Hobbit took me out of that town and into The Shire!
