I've been a cancer survivor for 3 and 1/2 years and I really want to know if changing your diet does make a difference you hear sugar feeds cancer but then you hear Moffitt saying that sugar really doesn't have anything to do with it I don't eat very healthy I really want to know if people think sugar is the culprit

I do not believe that sugar is the "culprit" but any doctor will tell you that eating healthy is important because it gives your body the nutrients it needs to fight and help your immune system. Talk to your doctor(s) and see if there even small changes you can make to get the nutrients you need.

i don't think sugar is BAD but eating healthy is a good idea anyway. life is literally too short so eat what you want in moderation and it doesn't hurt to have a few ice cream sundaes when you might end up losing weight when on chemo or are more inactive.

MD Anderson says sugar consumption doesn’t matter as long as in moderation. Make it a treat no daily. Healthy diet is best with veggies and fruit and lean protein as the majority.

Hello cmilashoski,

Thank you for reaching out. Sugar is an ongoing discussion however medical journals and registered dietitians do say moderation is key. Overall healthy eating is encouraged. Whether you are struggling with weight loss, weight gain or want you and your family to eat better, reach out to a dietitian. First, see if your facility has an oncology dietitian. If not, perhaps there is one at another facility. Another option is Pearl Point (formerly the Minnie Pearl Foundation). They are now with the leukemia and lymphoma society but provide phone and online counseling by a dietitian free of charge: pearlpoint.org/. PearlPoint also has some recipes that you might find both healthy and tasty.

Warmly,

Kim
