You should seek advice from your GP in the first instance with regards to pain. It may be that you have an infection that must be treated. Ask the GP for a referral to the nearest Lymphoedema clinic, probably Bedford Hospital.
Hi if your leg is itchy it could be your skin is very dry/stretched due to swelling. My leg used to be the same. I was taught by a proper Lymphoedema nurse to moisturise my lower legs everyday, which I do in the morning and after a shower/bath. I have virtually got rid of the itching problem by doing this, it also feels like I am pampering myself as I use very posh body lotions with perfume. However if you have any open rash / sore areas perhaps get them checked out first as may be start if cellulitis that needs antibiotics asap and use unperfumed creams until you get your skin in good condition. I am 52 and have had Lymphoedema for 17 years - but I did not get diagnosed until 4 years ago - GP training very poor (I work in the NHS and there is a great deal of ignorance). I moved to a new area and got lucky with a knowledgeable doctor. I was sent to a local hospice where they have Lymphoedema nurses. I now wear compression socks which really help but are a pain in very hot weather so I tend to have a few days on and off with them. Get your leg checked for cellulitis then do what I do and "learn to love your leg" - pamper the skin. Hope this helps.
I suggest you contact the Lymphoedema Support Network lymphoedema.org . As well as a website they have a telephone help line (Monday to Friday).
There is a great lymphoedema nurse at St John's Hospice in Moggerhanger. Just down the road from you! You would probably have to get your GP to refer you but she's lovely and very knowledgeable. Good luck!
thank you
