Hi there to everyone from here in the UK :)

I've been thinking a bit lately about general fitness & exercise, which I have trouble with on several levels.

Firstly, I keep putting weight on because of the steroids I take/swelling, etc.

Next, a consequence of the swelling is that my hips, knees & leg muscles feel constantly weak...I really struggle to do things like climb stairs, & running is a non-starter. Also, my breathing is a lot worse than it used to be.

Anyway, my wife keeps asking if I've looked into anything that might help keep weight gain under control that is manageable with all those issues rumbling along. I can sort of manage slow, steady walking but wondered if anyone has cracked this particular problem or have any tips?

Yes you certainly do! How do you manage with the damp & the chlorine?

I used to swim a bit. Last time I was on holiday there was a very small pool I used but likewise it started me coughing so I decided to limit what I did.

Do your joint suffer from steroids? Mine just feel so weak to the point of feeble! I’ve been prescribed calcium to offset it but not sure it’s having much effect.

Yea but cons say i need it proven. Im on bordeline osteoprosis. Had loads of steroids

That’s pretty much my biggest fear to be honest. I feel like my hips & knees especially have just stopped properly functioning so partly that’s what I’ve wondered about. But so far when I try any exercise I just end up knackered rather than them feeling any stronger!

If i do leg excersises i put pillows underneath to ease weight off of do them on my backside lol

That’s a good idea! I’ll give that a try :-)

I started by walking 5 min per day and increased my time and speed every couple of weeks.

I added a pilates class once I could walk for 30 - 45 min without getting short of breath.

As far as weight loss goes, track what you eat. Plan on eating balanced diet with protein, fruits and vegetables, dairy, and plenty of water.

I've never totally got my head around what pilates is - I'll have to get onto Google, but thanks & good advice :)

Strength and stretch.

Yoga is good, too.

What about tai chi I do the form called shebashi it is for people with health problems. You can find it on your computer so if there are no classes near you, you should be OK. I also find it very relaxing

Hello! Have you tried any type of natural anti inflammatories? Like Moringa olifera? I can help with this if you would like to approach this way of thinking.

Hi Alger

I have looked into it & whilst I'm not the most disciplined of people over diet, & being totally honest never will be (I'm far too fond of my bacon butties, pork growlers, mushy peas & real ale...all very Northern English!) I keep an eye out for things that might help. I try hard to at least eat enough sensible things through the week to keep my weight as under control as I can. The swelling does tend to come regardless though, sadly.

Ok well I was thinking of directing you to zija international. They have some great mixes to help with weight, and inflammation. I can help you when you take a look and let you know what would work best for you.

I will have a look at it - thank you :)

Unfortunately due to other medical conditions, exercise is not something I can do much of. Swimming is out of the question as I sink beautifully. I used to be very active, but now is a different matter. I do walk, and have stairs that I use. Unfortunately I tend to fall down the stairs as well as up them, as often as managing them in the usual way. I have physio exercises that just about keep me moving, but alas no weight loss. I hope everyone finds some exercises they love doing.

It's really hard isn't it when your legs just won't get you around! I might look into pilates...nothing ventured, nothing gained!

Low impact training as in exercise in your home will be a start. BING or Google "low impact workouts". If you can stand walking or riding a bicycle in your neighborhood, this will help. See what your doctor can do in "stepping" down dosage rates of the steroids or other medications if this will help. Hope you feel better soon!

I used to cycle loads at one time, pretty much every day. Unfortunately I live in a very hilly part of the world. It used to take me 20 or so minutes to get to work & about 45 minutes to get home :D I really do miss cycling though & I still have my bike waiting in case I start to get better. I will certainly look into low impact workouts.
