I just wondered if anyone else has trouble swallowing? I know oesophagitis can mimic asthma but I've started to develop a problem with swallowing & don't know what to do about it. I've had two fairly serious choking incidents & am getting increasingly nervous about eating certain types of food (wholemeal bread, meat, etc.) if I don't have someone with me.
I think my upper airways have become 'tighter' & I'm on a lot of medication but wondered if anyone has any ideas or suggestions?

I've not really discussed it with the GP yet as it's only just really emerged as an issue over the last couple or so weeks. It started when I had a really bad incident with a piece of roti bread in an Indian restaurant, then a couple of days ago a piece of meat got stuck. That made me panic a bit as I thought it's obviously not a one-off.
Ah right so its scared u abit now. Should go check it out. Chokin can also be connected to gerd i was told by cons. But then again they all do dictate.
Yes, it's scared me as I have had a few other lesser occasions where I've struggled to swallow but not ended up choking. I plan to mention it anyway sometime soon - I wondered though as well how people manage it?
How strange, I have said for years that I would die choking to death. I never connected it to my Asthma. Now I know the why I'm having this choking. I can even choke on my saliva. Thank you for the information.
Never eat dry food always make sure it has some kind of sauce with it. Bread always be generous with the butter. Make sure you have a drink handy. Keep your throat hydrated . I always have a drink before I go out and have some chewy sweets with me. Good luck
Yeah, I got it. Small meals and bites, lots of water, comes with heartburn and hiatal hernia, bet you have one, get checked out. Ant acids have helped. Swallowing problems may be caused by GERD. Acidolphilus helps. Now 68, have had for many years, also genetic. Just some thought for you.
I have difficulty swallowing too. Turns out that don't have a throat disorder. I have a sufilte, soy allergy and other intolerances, the big one is a nickel intolerance. So when I drink a coke my throat gets tight as it does with most foods. My asthma of 11 yrs has changed from controlled with no meds to allergic that is uncontrolled on many new asthma meds.
I have asked my pharmacist if he can take a few minutes to go over my meds and what is going on with their use. The pharmacist; if educated and compassionate will do this. Some pharmacies now have little rooms where you can go over things privately. It is important to get all your meds in one place and if you don't have a good relationship with that person, contact the manager of the store. Perhaps mentioning how inportant this is to you will get you the help you need and that manager won't want to see you switching to a different pharmacy. That is a huge chunk of revenue for a store to lose. Good luck.
Yes, I have a heck of a time swallowing and will not eat challenging foods in public. I had an endoscopy and found out that in addition to the asthma, my Sjogren's Syndrome has caused slow motility. They sent me to a speech therapist (g figure) to learn techniques to eat and drink without choking to death. I'm not dead but they didn't work either. I just try to take small sips or bites and not talk and focus on what I am eating or drinking while I am doing it. While this does not make for good eating and socializing, it has decreased the incidences of choking, gagging, aspirating on food, and vomiting that had started happening.
