I was wondering if anyone else felt a sense of relief hearing a doctor confirm that they have an anxiety disorder? Many years ago, when I finally went to my doctor for my anxiety she explained to me, (in front of my parents) that my anxiety is a chemical imbalance and that my brain processes it differently. I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder soon after. As worried and scared as I was, I did feel some small sense of relief. It was like how I'd been feeling for so many years finally made sense to me. And for the doctor to say it in front of my parents who often would tell me to "get over it" or "just stop worrying" made me feel like I finally had someone who really understood what I was going through.

Yes! I had that sense of relief too, because from that point on i was able to understand better what i was dealing with, and had the tools to explain it to others, and with that understanding opens the door to establishing a game plan to overcome this

Thank you for your response! I wasn't sure if it was a dumb question or not because of course no one wants to be told that they have a mental illness, but I had spent so long as a kid growing up not knowing why I had so much anxiety, that there was a small amount of relief when I was diagnosed with GAD. It gave me so much understanding too, and I can explain it to others even though at times people still don't understand. I definitely feel it opened the door to dealing with it too.
