Elevated Alt but never consume alcohol.

Hello everyone,

My boyfriend was told he has an Elevated ALT + AST/GGT + Creatine. His doctor thought he might have hepatitis but after the doctor gave him those tests, he tested negative for those. The doctor said that he's not worried but will keep an eye on him. He does not drink at all (he's a health nut) and has been consuming protein shakes and taking Iron supplements. He just started working out, for the first time in years, (was spending 2-3 hours of intense workout at the gym) before the test. He's 5'10 and around 150 lbs which puts him at a normal BMI. He NEVER uses aspirin, does not take drugs.

After a quick google we realized the workouts may have raised it along with iron and protein shakes (as we found from a body building forum). As of that night he stopped working out, iron supplements and drinking the protein shakes. Nearly a month later he tested again and the new test isn't as bad as the first but still says it's elevated...Is there anything we can do to lower these results?

If the doctor says it was the protein shakes and that liver numbers are going in the right direction then your boyfriend is probably doing what he can. How are his iron levels now? I would hope, the docs would continue with the blood tests until they reach normal again. Make sure he has minimal natural iron in his diet for now, if it was iron causing the problem. Has the doc also done standard blood tests for other common liver diseases, just to rule them out and confirm the iron diagnosis.

Thank you for responding. No, the doctor never said anything about he protein shakes...we found that online after the doctor had no idea. The doctor also hasn't done other blood tests for other common liver diseases either.
