What does Lipedema feel like to the touch?

I have seen people with what I would consider less severe lipodema (visually you may not really be able to tell), and I have heard not everyone gets pain at least early on. I thought that by squeezing the fat one can feel it which is I guess the point of my post. If you pinch, squeeze your fat and it’s just lumpy pieces rather than smoothish fat, would that not be a tell tale sign of lipodema? Or is that just surface fat and the fat that would have the Lipedema is actually below all that?
