25th of January is a traditional feast day in Scotland (Robert Burns' birthday), celebrated with haggis, tatties and neeps. And scotch.
Haggis is a meaty treat, full of organ meats, so very nutritious. It also has oatmeal, so it's surprisingly high carb, 18g/100g which is more than the tatties (potatoes)! Neeps are either turnips, or swedes/rutabagas, so they get a big tick.
I may make myself a mini feast tonight. Haggis is available at any supermarket in the UK, celeriac can stand in for the tatties, and the neeps will stand in for themselves.
Scotch is low carb already 😋
Anyone else indulging?

My daughter and her husband are partaking tonight. Our great grandson couldn’t believe anyone would want to eat pork liver!! They’re omitting the tatties and having leeks. 🙄
Sadly for me, the haggis we can buy in the supermarket is labelled "may contain gluten" and "may contain wheat" - so something I have had to give up since my coeliac diagnosis. I used to really enjoy it - so please enjoy my share!
It's good to read a real original recipe - I have always loved old recipes, and I always enjoy the idea of using "everything but the squeak" of any animal killed for meat - so another reason for liking haggis!
I wonder if you could order it in? For next year, anyway.
I agree with you about nose to tail eating. I now will not eat anything of an animals nervous system, just too risky after BSE, but if you are going to slaughter an animal, you should not waste anything.
You can buy GF haggis, some with GF oats and some with no oats. GF stuff is typically only available at this time of year, but some butchers stock it all year.
No oats sounds even better, as I have been avoiding them for the last 6 months. I will look for this! Is it just Scottish butchers, or might I find it down here in East Anglia?
It's possible - I know there were often Burn's nights down there, so you could approach your nearest Scottish society to ask?I typically bought haggis from Waitrose or Sainsbury's, but I wasn't GF when I lived in EA. I think Sainsbury's might be your best bet, as they stocked Simon Howie, who are the main GF brand here.
I can also send you a link to a butcher who make GF steak pie, square sausage, black pudding and haggis, and they do postal orders. It's not cheap stuff though, £7 for a haggis
Their GF stuff is only available at this time of year up here, so it may be the same down there.
For some reason you can't order GF ones for home delivery (I couldn't order one for delivery and I'm in central scotland), so it might need a trip to the supermarket to check in person.
A Google search for Simon Howie GF shows the GF packet, but a shopping search for it only returned the standard version.
I think the GF version is not here yet. I actually don't recognise the Simon Howie name very well, it may not have been sold widely in the south until recently.
It's been around for a while It was sold in Sainsbury's when I lived in cambs 10 years ago, and they had a wider range around Burn's night. I wasn't GF then, so I don't know if they stocked a GF one, but given the quantities, it wouldn't surprise me.
I can't buy a gluten free haggis from any of the supermarkets for home delivery/click and collect in Central Scotland, but I know they have them in store, so it doesn't surprise me you can't find them online either
Tesco never stocked much haggis when I was down south. Waitrose only stocked Macsweens or own brand from what I recall, but neither of those brands really has a GF offering, which is why you won't have seen and empty spot for it
Sainsbury's is the best bet, although obviously no guarantees. There would be no harm in looking if you happened to be in there.
I have just looked at Sainsbury's website, and they have Macsween, Simon Howie original and Simon Howie vegetarian, but not the GF. Macsween's website mentions Waitrose for the GF, but no others. I can't imagine a vegetarian wanting to eat a haggis!
Like I say above, I can't get GF haggis online with our supermarket, even though I do know they have it in the local store here, so I think you'd have to try in store. Might be next year for it though now
We enjoyed ours last night Badger, with a nice wee dram of Chivas Regal 12 yr old I found at the back of the cupboard! Our haggis was also MacSween, and somewhat to my surprise DH and DS both enjoyed it as well as the tatties and neeps. In fact, for me, the neeps (swede to me), was the star of the show - my mother (a Scot) often gave us mashed swede, but I had rather forgotten about it and will be cooking it again very soon!
