Avocado or toffee?

I go into the Co-op, put bananas and oranges (not very keto I know) in my basket... and broccoli... and walk past the avocados - as they are expensive.

Then I feel I need a treat, so I buy a packet of Thornton's Special toffee, for almost as much as the price of an avocado!

Next week I will treat myself to an avocado... and try to leave the toffee!

🥑 every time! I haven't eaten sweets in all year, and the idea of eating pure sugar is disturbing to me now. The same maillard reaction that browns meat in a pan happens in your bones, organs, blood vessels, eyes etc etc in the presence of blood glucose.

Do you live in a food desert ? Asda and Tesco sell avocados for under a pound, and waitrose is currently selling ripen-at-home ones for 60p.

The best is the if you can access an outdoor market. I have paid between 3 for £2 and 7 for £1. Super bargains if you can get there before closing.

Waitrose is half an hour away by bus - and I avoid public transport because of Covid.

The local Co-op sells avocados, but for over a pound, I seem to recall.

I get Waitrose to deliver my cereal-free muesli every month or so - perhaps I could invest in an avocado next time!

Almost the same as me. The nearest shop to sell fresh veg etc is the local Co op which is ten minutes away if I drive, no bus service there, or back. And yes, the prices are steep, I agree.

I could walk there, but would need to climb back up my 1,000 ft mountain on my own two feet and I am not up to that at all, especially carrying shopping. No footpaths so couldn't even use a shopping trolley to get home with my shopping. I have thought many times about it, but can't see that is feasible.

The nearest Morrisons is about 25 min away by car in Caernarfon, much longer by bus, though there is a bus service there and back, but they are few and far between. The nearest Waitrose is about 20 miles away inMenai Bridge, the nearest Aldi and Lidl a similar distance. It would take me a lot longer to get to any of them on a bus, never mind waiting for a bus back. I wouldn't think of trying to go further than Caernarfon by bus.

When I was in Stoke so much last year I really appreciated the fact that I could get to any supermarket I could think of (except Waitrose) within a few minutes and dreaded coming back here because I would miss that. I did miss it but I love living away from heavy traffic and neighbours on my mountain track. I am going back to Stoke for the winter though, I don't want to be snowed in here again and am considering whether I might think of selling up. Time will tell.

Where you live sounds similar to my 78 year old brother in Powys! I don’t blame you for not going on an avocado trek 🤣🥑

Well, I have to confess that I had 2 small Avos in stock, but only one remains and that may hit the dust later, though I hope not.

A couple of subtle differences: My Co-op is 7 minutes walk, and the height gain on the return trip is 3m!

For years even that was impossible, as I was disabled.

Avocados every time, I love them. I also have too much respect for my fillings to eat any kind of toffee!!

I would so like to be able to join the avocado club,I have bought them 3 times now and tried them 3 times, but I cant stand the consistency,no matter what I do to them, such a shame as they look good, almost ooze health to me,will have to find something else to take its place

If you live in North Wales join the local sheep rustling club. It will get you out in the evenings, you'll learn to speak welsh and you will get to run around the mountains..

I adore avocados but they are expensive (and the worse thing is when you cut one open and it’s black inside!).

If you have a sweet tooth, I think buying individually wrapped sweets or chocolates are the way to go. This week I’ve eaten one starburst and one lindor.

Ah, the crushing disappointment when you halve your avocado and it’s black and stringy inside 😫

However, the flip side is when you discover a perfectly ripe one which is still firm enough to slice over your salad.

I probably shouldn’t, but I eat half an avocado most days. 🥑

Missdoubleyou profile image
Missdoubleyou in reply to monday1957

Why not? A good avocado can be eaten on its own, spooning it out of the skin!

monday1957 profile image
monday1957 in reply to Missdoubleyou

Ah, I mean in terms of calories consumed...although I don’t count them myself, and I know avocados are healthy fats, I imagine my weight loss might be marginally faster if I reduced my consumption! 🥑

Hopefully not, because avocados are filling 😀

Are avocados actually good for you (like broccoli) or are they just LCHF?

I’m sure they are very good for you (lots of potassium, fibre, mono unsaturated fats), but maybe not so good for our planet. Massive carbon emissions (air miles is what makes them expensive) to bring you your fresh avocados, much better to eat locally produced broccoli?

You are so right there with the massive carbon emissions issue...sigh...🥑

Where do they grow?

Can they not ripen in surface transport like bananas?

If "they" were concerned about the environment, they would build a railway from Cape Town to Tromso.

Spain, Israel, South Africa, Peru, Chile. Not sure who you mean by “they”, but we can all do our bit by eating local more often. I’m not saying we shouldn’t eat avocados, bananas or anything else exotic, I certainly do eat them, but I do think we should consider the air miles involved in bringing us these foods, so maybe they should be considered more of a luxury.

I compromised... I bought a £1.15 avocado and a £0.70 packet of Co-op mixed toffee.

Packets of toffee make me feel bloated for half a week, and the carbohydrate stimulates the release of insulin, which decreases my blood sugar, which makes me hungry - I do not normally eat afte 14:00 - but I got "sucked in" at the chippy - and had some fish and a spring roll!

I ate the avocardo yesterday - and it was much more fun - and beetter for me.
