New way of eating

Going to try today low carbs and high fat diet which is alien to me . The no fruit feels very strange . I eat loads of fruit and low fat yoghurts . Lentils beans and jacket potatoes. Any advice . Have looked at the food charts advised by admin . I have been eating whole meal bread and pasta looks basically that you eat meat and non starchy veggies berries and eggs . Can you eat apples ? Thanks for any advice .

Any advice.

Firstly, don't eat loads of fruit and low fat yoghurts . Lentils beans and jacket potatoes.

Secondly, follow the above by cutting out eating whole meal bread and pasta.

Then research other low carb sites, and try what suits you. One size doesn't fit all and you are going to stumble, but the results are worth the effort.

Thanks Mike Diet dr very helpful . I am going to try this and also my husband needs to lose at least 3 stones . The meat and veg will definitely suit him . I may struggle with fruit but I’d use fruit to fill myself up so that may be counter balanced by the main meals

I struggled with cutting out/down fruit. I used to eat loads. Now I have a veg bowl rather than a fruit bowl. Honestly, you get used to it, especially when you get results!

I'd suggest trying something quite strict for a 2 weeks or a month, like DietDoctor's 14 day plan. Rather than imagine how hard it's going to be, try it and see how you adjust. It probably won't be easy to start with, but I bet you have the will power to stick with it for a few weeks, and then you can start to see how it feels, and how good the food is.

Honestly, I barely miss the carbs, and certainly don't want to throw away any of the veggies and proteins I plan to eat today to make room on my plate for very low nutrient, pretty tasteless carbs.

Look at it this way, F1, has your current diet caused you to lose weight, or gain weight? I'm guessing you've gained, which is why you're here, so a change has to be a good thing :)

Meat, fish, eggs, full fat dairy, lots of vegetables, a small amount of berries, natural fat. Simples :)

You've had some good pointers. I'd just say you won't be drowning in fat: it's only 'high' fat in relation to the very low level we've been frightened into eating.

Give it a good go, say 4 weeks, and see what you think then :)

Check the dietdoctor pages that Mike advised. They have some really good visual guides and some starter recipes.

LCHF is pretty simple. You just need to remember roughly which food items are "carby" and which aren't. Eat lots of the latter and avoid the former. Add some fat (butter, olive oil, meat fat...) to taste. Eat when you're hungry and stop when you're full.

Don't just use meat as your sole source of fat. Eggs, and dairy products (in their many different variants) are often a better choice.

It can be a bit hard to get your head around if you've spent years and years on a high-carb low-fat diet. But once you try it, you'll start losing weight and it'll just feel right. And then there's no going back.

It drives me nuts that the NHS put "fruit and vegetables" into the same box as if they're interchangeable. Metabolically speaking, they're completely different, but people imagine they're being virtuous by skipping meals and eating fruit instead ... because, hey, fruit is good for you and low in calories, right? Anyway, as others have suggested, drop the fruit for now and you'll be able to reintroduce it later on, when your appetite has changed and you have a healthier relationship with food.

Strange is’nt it but so right . Science has moved on . I guess sugar is the real baddy . I like the idea that fruit is nature’s treat . I have been consuming so much fruit and skipping meals only to find I am ravenous then eating and eating . My metabolism must be freaking out .

I eat plenty of fruit: berries, tomatoes, aubergine, courgette, peppers, cucumber, beans, avocados etc etc

I eat berries every day and got to 21% body fat on low carb. I also used to eat loads of whole grains - bulgar wheat & quinoa & rye bread, & it was a challenge to get my head around them not being as healthy as I thought. But I did & don’t miss them at all. I should say I do swim in double cream - I gave it up for a fortnight but found i just ate other stuff to plug my appetite, so I am not worrying about it.

The main problem with fruit is the natural sugars. If it's one or pieces daily, I struggle to see the problem.
