Dr Unwin this morning sent this Tweet: Dear Twitter friends with respect to the disadvantages of seed/vegetable oils. What are the best references to studies that are relevant please ?

This is a link to the thread: twitter.com/lowcarbGP/statu.... Needless to say this presentation and a Nina Teicholz presentation have been posted along with a number of resources.

There's a conspiracy theory that the whole "seed oil" thing was all about money. It goes something like this:

When Malaysia et al started expanding their palm oil plantations, growers of rapeseed and the like started losing market share. The reason was really simple: palm oil yield is about 10x higher than temperate-climate oil seed crops, and it's easier to process. Therefore palm oil is inherently cheaper (and considerably more eco-friendly).

A smear campaign was needed. This was easy to engineer because some of the new oil palm plantations were actually just an excuse to clearcut old-growth forests. By playing up the ecological angle (in reality, most palm oil is not grown on ex-rainforest land), US and European growers were able to demonize the competition. Throw in the "saturated fats are bad for you!" argument, and palm oil was out for the count. Coconut oil was handily dealt with at the same time.

The basic facts are true enough. Whether it was a deliberate conspiracy to destroy South-East Asian oil companies is less clear, but it wouldn't be surprising; it's common knowledge that a cartel of olive-oil manufacturers played a similar trick (leveraging the popularity of the "Mediterranean diet" to increase their sales in the 80s and 90s.
