Seed and Grain Quantity?

Hi ,

This may sound like a daft question but should I introduce seeds and grains gradually to my diet, via yoghurts and salads?

I just remember learning that blueberries were good for you and I ended up with severe cramps after just a few so dont want to eat too many and cause a negative affect.

Not a daft question at all!

Grains for me, zero. I'm on a low carb journey, no grains for now. Maybe in the future I will eat oats, but that's not what you are asking.

I added chia seeds and linseed/flaxseed to my diet. Roughly a tablespoon of each, total 20 grams, and my body responded positively. I doubled it to 40grams,and it stopped everything. An - um - mechanical investigation showed that the seeds were acting as a plug. Introduce any fibre gently, and keep a careful eye out.

This is interesting to me! Around the time I introduced a lot of seeds, including the chia pudding and,... well...let's just say there was a big decrease in activity. Now you say they can act as a plug...it makes sense. It's so easy to go in all gung ho with something you think is healthy, maybe it goes to show dietry change should be slower!

If you are introducing more fibre I would suggest also increasing your fluid intake, water is good (not juices or sugary drinks), or at least make sure you have a good intake over the day, it helps move the bulk along.

Fibre is vastly overrated. It's often said that adding fibre to cure constipation is like adding more cars to a traffic jam. And the old cure for constipation was (and is) an effective lubricant, as indeed a high fat diet is.

As my Spanish relatives tell me, one old Spanish cure for constipation is to drink some olive oil.

Yes 😂

I started adding some double cream to my breakfast of full fat Greek yoghurt, fruit compote, and pumpkin/sunflower seeds. Defo had interesting results 😂

How much dietary fibre?

You can if you want to, but there's no "should" - the dietician's assertion that they're essential for health is so untrue I'm going to call it a barefaced lie. I used to have some muesli now and then for breakfast (one tablespoonful), although I don't anymore. A bit of homemade toast is occasionally nice with scrambled egg. Just don't overdo it.
