Hi everyone

I started low carb 2 days ago still finding my feet 😂

I miss my cups of tea as I had sugar in them as don’t like tea or coffee with out sugar. I only drink water as my main drink but would love to have a hot coffee/tea no and again... thank you in advance

Hi Sonia,

It takes time.... it was the same for me. I have to confess I first managed it by having a biscuit with it!

Meanwhile not try some totally different teas? I have a herbal selection from the supermarket like peppermint, camomile, fennel?

I also have some fancy loose black teas with flavors like yuzu (lemon) or rose petals that I bought on holiday in France then order online now. Also things like a very pale Darjeeling These definitely don’t go with milk (like a good Yorkshire tea) but are still warm? Maybe go along to Whittards or Fortnum and Mason to try some samples of what is out there? One other thing I tried in November was Yorkshire Biscuit tea? It tastes like tea with a Biscuit dunked in it (delicious!!!!). I’m not sure if it’s still available or was a limited edition?

Cheers,

Sarah

Good advice, but be wary of Whittards samples. They are often made from a powder than is mostly sugar.

I picked one at random from their website. whittard.co.uk/instant-tea/...

Sugar, Acidity Regulator E330 (Citric Acid), Black Tea Extract (1%), Flavouring.

That's basically very expensive sugar.

Another store to try is an Australian chain T2. They don't have many stores, but their teas are excellent, if expensive, and they have tasting samples and also sniffing samples.

Aside from the 'alternative tea' approach (Earl Grey or Chinese green tea would be my recommendation) you have three other options:

1) Tea with stevia leaves. Stevia extract seems to be everywhere; stevia leaf, no so much, but if you can find it, add one or two whole leaves to your tea for a slight sweetness hit. It also has a sort of herbal, minty flavour that complements the tea. I recommend growing your own if you find you like it.

2) Coffee with cream. Heavy cream is OK on low-carb because it's mostly fat and very little lactose. Coffee with a tablespoonful of cream is almost like a dessert! Try not to overdo it, of course.

3) Use an artificial sweetener, and phase them out as fast as you can. I used aspartame, and found that I simply lost interest in it after about 2 weeks.

Some will advise you not to attempt (3) because it keeps you stuck in a mindset where things need to be sweet. It worked out fine for me, but YMMV.

Agreeing with Sonia, can I suggest powering through for a few days or weeks? I was practically weaned on milky, sweet tea. As I grew, I used less milk but kept the sugar. One year I gave up sugar in my tea for Lent (6 weeks) but still drank the tea regularly with my family. I hated it at first, but got used to it. At the end of Lent, I was looking forward to getting my sweet tea back, but it was now undrinkable! 😔 I haven't had sugar in tea since.

Unsweetened tea is a completely different drink to sweet tea, and a somewhat acquired taste. I think it's worth trying to acquire it.

Other alternatives: miso paste. It's fermented soy and tastes a bit like soy sauce. Quite salty. Dissolve a teaspoon in hot water and it's basically miso soup. You might enjoy that.

hot water with milk: I have a friend who drinks that. It's tea without the tea. Seems weird, but she likes it.

I used to drink coffee with one sugar, switched to cream and didn't need the sugar as it felt creamy and sweet

Try organic whole milk or cream. It tastes sweeter naturally so you may not need sugar. If you wait a week or two, your tastebuds may have adjusted so might not miss the sugar at all.
