After reading The Toad's post on calories and all your input, I decided to mention a couple people that some of you might be interested in reading/listening to. First is an author Robb Wolf who wrote a book called Wired to Eat. I found out about it via Amy Berger. He presents the theory that everyone processes carbs differently, so no eating plan is a one-size-fits-all proposition. He has a 7 day carb test to determine how you process carbs and then tailor your eating to that. Some people tolerate carbs better than others. There are loads of used copies out there- amazon.com/Wired-Eat-Cravin... Though I guess most of you are in the UK, betting amazon UK will have a bunch too.
The other is Gary Taubes who wrote Good Calories Bad Calories, then an easier, layman-friendly version called Why We Get Fat. He pretty much nukes the whole calories-in-calories-out theory of weight loss and gain and does a very understandable explanation of the hormones that drive fat accumulation and hunger. I think it's Lustig in his book Fat Chance that pretty much does the same thing. Taubes has a great talk on YouTube at a low carb conference in Houston where he explains his take on all this. youtube.com/watch?v=cm5Cdy4... He's a hoot to listen to. It's pretty long, over an hour, but well worth the time. And he does hit on the whole misguided notion that getting fat is a behavior problem- gluttony and sloth- which drives typical advice to eat less and exercise more.
In that video he tells about someone whose weight loss was stalled by only eating an apple a day. That much fructose/carbs stopped their weight loss in its tracks. Thought that was interesting. Oh, there's one other person he tells about that only added berries back into their meals. That stopped it for them too. Thinking that maybe some of the people who are having trouble losing here might be interesting in trying Wolf's 7 day carb test to find out where they fall, how they process the carbs to help determine what they can and can't tolerate since everyone is different.
