Finger on the pulse

Hello, I’m new to the concept of a LCHF diet. My husband is not a great lover of meat so we tend to eat a lot of fish and veggies. How do pulses fit into the program? We have been eating kidney beans, chickpeas, lentils and haricot beans etc but I’m wondering whether we should? I would appreciate any advice as I really want to lose weight and everything I’ve read so far indicates that this is the way for me to go. 😊

I would say during an induction phase that it may hinder your results to include them but once you are established, less hungry, and no carb cravings, you could experiment with adding some back in and note how you feel.

All the best :)

I sometimes struggle a bit with the concept. The fact that cabbage fried in butter with salt is much preferable to garden peas ...and that, bacon, fried egg and fried mushrooms is a BIG winner over a bowl of all fruit and fibre and skimmed milk! I did this once before when I was still vegetarian, and had quite a bit of Butter, eggs, cheese and tinned tuna.

The rule of thumb is to keep carbs 20-50 cals a day while incensing fat, plus you can deduct a gram of carb from your daily total for each gram of fibre. It is mainly about your diet being balanced to being fueled mainly by calories from fat, and very little coming from carbs. pulses are high in carbs and low in fat, so not great on this FCHF thing.

You, don't really need to count anything or be too exact!! It works by changing the way your body burns fuel you put in it, so is not necessarily an instant big loss diet, but, after a while, your body switches to fat burning and (provided you don't eat more in the day than you burn) it will then switch straight to burning stored fat, in place of telling you it needs more food to make glucose to burn.

Personally I find it helps me to count stuff when I first start (carbs are sneaky!)

The figures I read are optimum are around 70% fat and only 5% carbs 25% protein. and not going too mad on the calories.

not easy to get your head round at times to begin with. good luck.

sorry, I should have said I was pescatairian because I did still eat fish!

Thanks Vale57 that’s really helpful. Do I take it that you are no longer vegetarian or pescatarian? I am finding it a bit confusing especially as we don’t eat a lot of meat. I guess it’s going to take a bit more forward planning but it will be interesting. I may find myself being too busy planning that I have no time to eat 😂😂😂😂

I went back to meat eating a year or so ago, before that I used to eat fish but no meat. It was mainly through looking hard at what i was eating and realising I was very low on protein. So went back to meat for a while. I may go back Veterinarian at some point.

The protein intake is the thing that concerns me at the moment. I’ve a busy couple of days but on Wednesday OH is out all afternoon and evening so I will sit down and read up on what I need to be doing.

Please don’t start eating Vets though 😂😂
