NPlate and hair thinning

Hi from a very wet and windy Dartmoor.

I’m on nPlate and have been for the past two months, platelets are stable at 123 which is good. Have had a few side effects, joint pain, headaches but am also noticing my hair is thinning, even my hairdresser said I had lost a noticeable amount. Has anyone else had this? If so did it stop after a while or continue whilst taking nPlate?

I have shoulder length hair and it’s getting to the point I need to consider a short hairstyle.

Any help would be great, thanks in advance.

Hi. I’m sorry to hear about your hair loss. I have been on another drug called Eltrombopag (or brand name Revolade) for over a year. When I was initially put on 50mg/day I didn’t notice any problem but I had to increase to maximum dose which seemed to provoke hair loss. I have lost so much hair I can’t believe I still have some left but actually I’m far from bald. The texture has been badly affected - it’s like cotton wool. I wish I could find something to restore its lustre but so far nothing has worked. Getting older probably doesn’t help! But I didn’t want to depress you. Your’e on a different drug and you may have better luck. The way I look at it now is that I count my blessings I have not been diagnosed with a life threatening illness like cancer or Parkinson’s Disease. Everything is relative as they say. Thank you for your reply, it makes sense you saying your hair was like cotton wool, that’s what is also happening to mine, it’s all gone very weird. My husband is being very sweet saying it looks ok, but all I can see is a cotton wool head of hair that’s whispy and so much thinner. I’m tempted to cut it really short and dye it pink!

Hi thank goodness someone else has had the same problem as me, I’ve looked up the side effects for Nplate and they all say at trials there was no reports of hair loss or thinning. My hair is the same as yours and equally my hairdresser has noticed. I’m trying L’Oreal reinforcing shampoo, black bottle lined with pink edging. It’s feeling a bit better, over the last few days. Plantuar is good but expensive. This treatment for me is working but my platelets are all over the place. Last week they were 369 so missed a dose, had a blood test Tuesday (1st June) they were 260 then yesterday, treatment day they were at 40 🤷‍♀️ I’m asked if I’m ok, any ITP symptoms, nothing serious that I’ve noticed, haven’t got a clue what’s going on. So this treatment will be going on for a while yet. I’ll keep you posted on the results of the shampoo, I’ve teamed it with a thickening conditioner too. 👍🏻

Thank you so much for your reply! It’s reassuring I am not going made! I hair is like candy floss, my husband keeps telling me it looks ok but all I can see it frizzy thinning hair. I will try the shampoo and will also keep you posted x

Take collagen and biotin. Supplements.On nplate no problems with hair loss but had it with Revolade. I take these every day, my hair much improved. Xx

Check out biotin and ITP. I looked it up and found biotin is counter indicated for ITP.

Hi, thanks for this, I will check. I told my Haem cons what I was taking and he didn’t say anything. But will definitely double check now. I have not been given any information from the hospital in anything, they told me to search on the internet and that’s a minefield!

I try to check out anything new by throwing in “ITP and ———“. You’re right. It’s not easy and we’re not given enough information. This website has given me more practical info than my GP or haematologist.

Hi thereMy wife had that problem while on nplate,her hair were really thin.after a year

as the dosage got smaller she got her full hair back.

Although n plate stopped working on her after 3 years they started her on revolade and that's not looking good either.

Ah a friend recommended biotin so I’ll try that and collagen too along with the reinforcing shampoo. Thank you

Hi, I’ve found these at a reduced price in Asda, the shampoo by Tresemme contains collagen and the leave in serum by L’Oreal contains biotin. I’ve got the serum on now leaving it on for a bit, we’re not going out anywhere so we’ll see what happens. I’ll let you know the results
