High platelets of 490 should be 400

Hi everyone,truly hope you’re all well. My gp said my blood showed suspected thrombocytopenia and I was to see haematology. I had my phone appointment today but the consultant said I have a high number latelet count and not low,as my go first thought. Can anyone tell me what this means? Thanks

Could it possibly be a slip either of the doctor's tongue, or of your ear? A count over 450 indicates thrombocythemia (a synonym of thrombocytosis)...I hope you get some effective treatment 🙂

No he definitely said they should be 400 but mine are showing 490.

Yes, sorry! That was what I was trying to imply: that your count of 490 doesn't indicate thrombocytopenia (low platelets) but could be thrombocythemia (aka thrombocytosis) ie excessive platelets... Should have made myself clearer! 🙄

Oh,😊thank you. My gp said low platelets so made a referral for the hospital. Then I spoke to the consultant over a phone consultantation and he said “no,it’s high platelets and not low”. I’m now being checked for jak2.
