Hello

Please could anyone comment on whether or not exercise (gym light to heavy weights or running/golf) is good or bad for itp counts below 40k?

Thank you

light exercise, walk is always good for ITP

I would not do anything that causes a strain like lifting weights. For me I know below 50K I can see the symptoms. Internal bleeding we can't see. Walking is about all I can manage and even then I have to be careful with running into things and falling.

Although I do not exercise on a low platelet count I must exercise for general health and my diabetes and I do that when my count is reasonably good (above 60)

It depends. My understanding is that internal bleeding does have symptoms eventually (pain, fever, weakness, disorientation, etc.) whether they show too late is of course another story. I think there is nothing wrong with exercise as long as it isn't strenous, so some light sports should be okay. Even light exercise is fine and walking is definitely a okay. Just be careful and listen to your body. Let's all keep in mind that internal bleeding is very rare even though it is the proverbial skeleton in the room :)

Howdy

I’m a fitness instructor with a average platlet count of about 25!

Obviously I wouldn’t recommend boxercise classes or taking up judo, but general fitness, yes, why not.

I don’t think I’d recommend competitive weight lifting, but I don’t see a problem with relatively heavy machine weights, I’m thinking sets of 12/10/8 or even 10/8/6.

Obviously, if you are suffering with nose bleeds, badly bleeding gums, blood shot eyes etc, then maybe a trip to the gym might be a bad idea, but if your bruising etc is normal for you, then go ahead.

Low impact machines might be good for the cardio like bike, cross trainer, steppers etc.

Just take care and only do what you feel comfortable with.

Definitely exercise is good. Not contact sports when platelets really low. I play korfball.....like basketball when platelets above 20 or 25...
