Hi All,
Has anyone done Sky Diving or any such freefall activities having ITP?
Hi All,
Has anyone done Sky Diving or any such freefall activities having ITP?
I have not engaged in any such activities, in part because my haematologist expressly told me that sky-diving was the one thing he did NOT want me doing (my daughter had just gone and wanted me to come out and go sky-diving with her). I'll be interested to know if others have gone and lived to tell the tale.

Well it all depends on your count, how much you bleed and how good of a skydiver you are. If you have low counts I would think you shouldn't. If you have a rough landing, You might have bleeding. Can you guarantee a decent landing?
If dentists could operate on 50k+ counts, I think we can risk Sky Diving too?
Hi, as others have said, if your count is high, say 140, then perhaps you may risk it, my count goes about 36 but can be as low as 14, but seems to average 25, I sometimes have a bruises, but can not remember the knock that caused them. I am not sure that a heavy impact with the ground would be a good thing, no telling what internal bleeds you might get.
The other thing is insurance, you might not be able to get it, and if you were to be laid up, can you cover the cost?. However if a Skydiver were to fall on you that would be a whole different ball game :~}.
Oh didn't though about all these. Thanks Billmox. Definetely if we have episodes of nose bleeding/bruising, we will be at high risk.!! My counts are in 50k right now (kind of highest from few months) so was thinking if I can try. Having little higher count is a luxury with ITP so wanted to fullfill some dreams.
Hello Again, I as I have mentioned before, I carried on working as an EMT, even when my blood count was at 25, I was lucky that my doctors backed me. Responding to incidents at speed, which has its risks, and being assaulted even, ITP could have been an issue.
I would say that there is nothing to stop you from doing what you dream of doing, so long as you know the risk's and trying to over come them, I mean has anybody jumped from a plane wearing the kit that American Footballers use?.
All the best.
Bill
I was doing aerobatic paragliding when i first noticed intense bruising, 2 weeks later after it had gone away i finally went to the doctor and was diagnosed with ITP and had a count of 3. So i think i was probably doing 6G loops with no platelets and it wasn't a problem. I just missed another trip because my count dropped to 20 and its not that uncommon to break ankles etc which is didn't think was a god idea. but i personally would definitely do it at 50.
