Itp accute or chronic ?: Hi my daughter... - ITP Support Assoc...
Itp accute or chronic ?
What were her recent scores? How old is she?
I believe if it last over 8 weeks it's chronic but your daughter doctor would be the best person to confirm.
She's 4 this is her second episode in 5 months the last time it lasted around 10 wks before her counts improved , were still only into the 1st wk this time so repeat bloods next wk but last time they were still at 2 this time the reading was zero .
ITP is such a frustrating illness, its very inconsistant. My Son had ITP when he was 18 months old platelet count 3 they continued to do blood checks every few weeks one week he would be above normal others he was below ...... It took them nearly a year to sign him off and said it was acute ITP. So to my belief I feel if they are always below normal then the chance it is chronic. It can take a good 6 months even with Acute ITP to recover. Try not to worry (even tho its so hard not to) your doing the right thing by keeping a close watcher on your daughter. Hope everything goes well Xx
Thanks , can't believe they can find treatments for hiv etc but nothing really seems to work for this , never even knew this existed till she got it
We were told by our pead heamo more than 12 months with repeated episodes considered chronic
Hi, I have chronic which is on going, I live with a relatively low blood count of 15-25 and have had the odd relapse due to strong viruses. I think acute is a short lived condition, like a shock to the system but clears up and goes back to normal. At the moment she may have acute ITP but if her counts stay low and do not recover to the 100s, she may be chronic like me. I hope that clears it up a bit, I was a bit uncertain myself until the consultant said I have chronic ITP. Hope she recovers soon

Hi, I was told that acute usually is used to describe ITP in children as it is viewed as temporary and that many children are "cured". Chronic is long lasting and usually describe adults who have had it for many years or likely to once diagnosed.
Regards.
My son age 4 was ITP for over 13 weeks but so far so good normal bloods since End of Jan 2014 but was told up to 6 months before it would get right we were just lucky it was sooner, I don't believe it's chronic either until older age
Good luck and hope all goes well
I will ask when we see peads on Monday , I have tried reading up about it but find it very confusing .
My daughter was diagnosed in august last year and the haemotologist told us they were now classing her condition as 'persistent ITP' but if she has it a year it will chronic. I haven't come across the term persistent itp anywhere else.
