Hi our son now 5 yrs has had fluctuating platelet count for over two years now. Platelets go as low as 1. Also having problems now with tonsils, become really enlarged with some bleeding when count is low which is every other week. Anyone else with child presenting like this? Also considering going to France this summer for hol via boat but very very nervous esp as count goes down to 1 with fatigue and tonsils 'acting up'.. Any advice etc very welcome.. We live in Ireland..

Has your son been tested for a primary immune deficiency? if he's getting constant throat infections it's maybe warranted. One of the oddities with immune deficiencies is that they predispose to autoimmune conditions and ITP is said to be the most common. A measure of his immunoglobulins would be a start.
Hi CamdenGirl, thank you for your reply & tips. We will run that past his Consultant at his next apt..Though i think he may have had his immunoglobulins tested about a year ago & they were normal.. Thanks again appreciate you replying...
Our son has fluctuating count and has been as low as 1. He's had ITP for 4 years now (he is 6). Not had the tonsil problems and generally has few/no bleeding events. We have been give some transemic acid (pills) to take when on holiday as a precaution against bleeds - maybe worth asking your consultant for this as well?
PS we have also flown with our son on many occasions (we live in Malta) and had no side effects.
