waking up from a medically induced coma

my boyfriend was in a medically induced coma for over a week after some complications from a surgery, he opened his eyes but is still unresponsive which scares me a bit. what really breaks my heart is that we are in a long distance relationship and there's nothing i can do to be with him right now, which really adds to everything that i'm feeling. i keep in touch with his mom, she told me that he was mumbling my name a day or two before he even opened his eyes but ever since that, whenever he's awake he just stares at the same spot and doesn't respond to anyone. i know that it can take time to regain consciousness and that's what the doctor said to his mom too – to give him some time, but i keep seeing all the stories about people opening their eyes and already being able to communicate in some type of way, asking for water or things like that. i was hoping that maybe within 24 hours he will show some improvement, but from what i've got from his mom, nothing's changed and it's the first time ever since everything has happened she told me she's scared. i don't know what to do, i feel so helpless. it's been about 48 hours since he opened his eyes and his mom told me the nurses said he didn't even fall asleep on his own this night and they had to give him sedatives for him to fall asleep. i just don't know how to feel. i'm still hopeful but i'm also really terrified.

I’d say it’s pretty rare for folk to be that responsive after a medically induced coma - I’m sure some might be able to do the ‘highland fling’ but not the majority. It took 11 days for me to become aware of my surroundings - even then it took me a few days to be able to communicate - that was mouthing things, silent screaming or gesticulating as much as I could.

Please be patient - you will wear yourself out!!!
