Heart Attack

My BIL is 52 and suffered a heart attack this week, is in ICU on a ventilator and sedated. Does anyone have any ideas about recovery times? We are not getting much info from the hospital.

Our information page gives you an idea of what to expect - there are various PDF’s that cover a usual journey.Everyone is different so there aren’t any hard and fast rules.

Hi Claire hope he pulls through and has a full recovery. I had a cardiac arrest early July and spent 3 weeks in ICU and 2 weeks on a recovery ward and had a ICD fitted before I left. All i can say from a personal side is i dont remember hardly anything whilst in the ICU only that what my partner has told me. I still feel that something's have been kept back from me. The delirium was terrible and still get side effects now. There are plenty of sites on-line that can help you understand what is going on. And its a slow progress, but he could not be in better hands and hopefully will make a full recovery. Always here if you need someone to talk to. Best wishes. Steve.

My ICU didn't have diaries but I have since obtained my hospital files. It took a while before I started to read them but they were very helpful in answering questions. In particular they demonstrated the care that I had received. Also my family kept a Whatsapp record which I have eventually read. Also I have photos which are now quite precious.

Mine had a diary and my partner kept a diary but neither mentioned i had to be resuscitated after day 10 and since i have access to my medical files and there is a lot they have redacted. Could not fault the care i received and appreciate everything they did for me. But I need the questions answered so I can move on. Hope you are well and have made a full recovery. Kind regards. Steve.

As Sepsur says everyone is different. In my case with heart failure, pneumonia and sepsis I was put in a coma before Christmas ‘19. I was operated on (new valve) and was slow to come round. My family were told twice that I wouldn’t make it. Initially they talked about days to come round, this changed to a week, then weeks or may be a month and then just said he will come round when he is ready. That happened later in February and I was out of hospital mid March
