Scarring on lungs
Don’t let them give up just yet the healing process takes a long time my mum has been on ICU 5 weeks and is only in the last few days starting to make slow progress I wish you all the best keep hope I know exactly what you are going through x
My lungs were incredibly badly damaged after sepsis, flu, pneumonia & severe ARDS - a CT scan a year later showed minimal scarring, I was also on dialysis for 7 wks with no longer term issue - catheteered for11wks with no long term issue either
Hospital showed us mums scan and her lungs are all white just small black patch. Hosp keep saying she wont recover. Her heart n brain wrking fine. They saying she is making no progress n oxygen level gone bk up 60%. Think her lungs are working less than 20%
I was similar to Sepsur. Ventilated 5 weeks, on 100% oxygen and prone for awhile. My lungs were badly scared I was on oxygen at home. My lungs appear to be improving. I’d ask lots of questions. Drs are amazing but they’re not infallible. 🤞
The consultant told my wife, at one stage, that my lungs resembled liver not lung tissue - they were so dense, I wasn’t tolerating intubation, so a nurse was hand pumping me for a time until I could tolerate intubation
What is hand pumping?
I think it was done with an Ambu bag - there is something called a water valve(?) I think that does the same job 😊 water something - it’s always difficult to remember all of the machines because I wasn’t awake - so I’m relying what others have told me
This must be so devastating to hear and a very difficult meeting for you.
My husband, who was in ICU for 7 weeks with covid, also had kidney failure and was on and off dialysis all that time. They kept trying to stop dialysis but they didn’t stop fighting for him. But doctors said they did not know if his kidneys would ever recover - they kept going and eventually they started working a bit after 6 weeks. In total he was In hospital 17 weeks. He is home now. My husband’s lungs are also scarred due to covid, and he is breathless, but can walk short distances and is recovering slowly. His kidney function has fully returned.
It was very difficult. Hope your husband makes full recovery. Ijust felt that ghe hospital want to free up beds and not keep patients in that long. My family are absolutly devastated and preparing for funeral. But this forum is giving me hope n im not sure if im bein naive and not accepting reality
You keep fighting Sammy, as everyone has expressed in their replies, we all have stories but all positive on the thread. Keep going and dont give up hope. Im still scared but getting stronger
If anyone is unhappy why not ask for a second opinion. They are not obliged to agree to this.
Hi Sammy please don't give up the fight, where are you located ? I recently saw the X rays of my husbands lungs, the second x ray was much worse than the 1st one, it was mainly white and heavily consolidated . I was told he is very poorly and we won't give up on him, thankfully they didn't, after 6 weeks on a ventilator he started to recover .It's a lot for you to take on, you must be devastated , but please ask for a second opinion .
Im located in birmingham. Seen mums scan it is all white just small black patches. I honestly think the doctors are so unsympothetic and just speak so harshly. Its just another patient for them. Whilst sitting and talking to the doctor yesterday it felt like iwas talking to a salesperson trying to give me every negatives and why we shud stop treatment. Rest of organs are fine. Lung damage and kidneys due to ventilator. Infections cleared. Ireally believe the hospitals are trying to free up the beds
I was pre covid at the QE and they saved my life and were very caring towards my wife. I was sedated for almost 2 months from before Xmas and the family were called in twice because I wasn’t expected to make it. There was never any suggestion that they would give up on me.
As @sepsur said ask for a second opinion
Im am happy to hear you have made it. I will ask for a second opinion. Mum has been sedated for 2 months. How is your recovery?
Recovery is progressing. I live in Worcestershire. On the physical side I lost a tremendous amount of weight which included muscle from where you don’t know you have muscle. I had to learn to walk, swallow, speak & eat. When the trachy was fitted slight damage was done one of the voice box nerves. When I came
Out in mid March covid was blamed with the lack of support in the community. Fortunately I found ICUStepsChester in June and was able to do chair exercises over zoom which included yoga which helped with the voice muscles. Every week I improve. Mentally what with the trauma and memory loss I paid for CBT which I have just finished. So mentally I’m a lot more stable. The QE is now providing video conferencing physio.
I hope all goes well
Sammy ask them to refer you to the QE or Heartlands - they are equipped to deal with your mums needs, and have immense knowledge , as they have learnt so much from the 1st wave .
I am so sorry for the situation you are in. I pray your mother gets well soon. My father was in the ICU, the lungs scanner was all white, just a few black spots. The doctor estimated over 85% of the lungs impacted. They did not have hope he would live more than 12h, his kidneys were failing, his liver also... and he had a beginning of sepsis. He made it through, we had many relapses, secondary infections, etc. and the recovery was v slow, but he is at home now learning to walk.
I am so happy your father is doing well and pray he has a full recovery. Sadly my mother passed away peacefuly on 26th december. She finaly had woken up on the fri night from the sedations and stats wer perfect but suddenly next day she lost her fight.
