Talking of Kay's excellent book Sticky Blood, I remember when I was reading it and she was describing her first meeting with Prof Hughes. I laughed out loud because it could have been me in the room. It was a totally identical experience.

It just shows how methodical and consistent a Doctor he was and still is. It does not matter whether you had the good fortune to see him 10 years or ten days ago your treatment will always be the same.

How wonderful to know that!

His little catch phrase sticks in my head and I want to have it printed in every students text book. "You must listen to your Patient" is so simple and yet so mind blowingly fundamental that it has to be the first lesson in becoming a good doctor no matter what specialty.

I think we should have tee shirts printed with that slogan on it to commemorate his commitment to Hughes - what do you think?

I agree totally about Prof Hughes, a lovely man without whom a lot of us would not be alive.

He said to me, "Listen to the patient, they will tell you what is wrong with them".

I saw him again last month and will be again in the autumn.
