Saw the hand Surgeon today and he is leaning toward stabilising my wrist/hand with a few screws. I have it splinted ATM with a view to surgery Thurs or Fri. If I wasn't flying to Europe in 5 weeks they would *maybe* cast it but can't fly with a cast due to swelling etc. I asked about stopping Xarelto (they are aware of APS) and he said they merely tourniquet the arm to make a bloodless field when they cut and insert screws.
Has anyone else been as clumsy as me and fallen and broken wrist and hand? if so, was this the procedure used? it is not much fun when I'm right handed and can't close thumb and forefinger!! Typing is very slow! I will have to learn to use Siri....

Poor you. I know exactly how you feel as I broke my right wrist 2 and 1/2 years ago, 2 weeks before Christmas. It was very painful and didn't feel right. Eventually, just before New Year someone believed me and decided to operate but was delayed due to conflicting views of Dr's and ward Sister of what to do about Warfarin. I told them I could go on Fragmin injections to lower INR safely but no one listened. By the time they did make up my mind I was 3 weeks post break and bones starting to heal out of line, so they had a job to correct it as much as poss and couldn't do what they had planned so just put in 2 screws and back in plaster casts for another 7 weeks!! I was not best pleased. Eventually with the help of my physio colleagues and own exercises got it functional. Still have to stretch it daily. I discussed this Warfarin situation with my haematologist. She was horrified. I asked for a written plan of what I should do if I need future surgery. Last year I needed a liver biopsy so put the plan into action. It worked a treat. (Just not so chuffed that I now have autoimmune hepatitis as well!) Anyway, the suggestion is to have a chat withyour haematologist and make a plan or ask the sugeon tof liaise with your haematologist. All the best.
I was unable to read your entire comment. I don't know if it's a problem with the site or my phone but I do hope your situation improves. I read up on some of your posts and others on here.. I want to let you and everyone know that just because some medications were not a good fit for me isn't in any way implying that it isn't a good fit for you or anyone else. We are all different in what our bodies accept and reject.., It's always best and beneficial to your overall heath to discuss all your concerns with your doctor. Hopefully, your doctor will listen to your concerns and together you can agree on a plan that best fits your particular situation. Best of luck to you! I hope we can all find the answers, support, and relief we are searching for.
May I wish you a really speedy recovering, I hope you heal well, it is always important that your medical team understands the limitations of our disease with operations etc, and yes I a clumsy, and in a bad phase currently fallen over 3 times in less than a week, literally tripped over thin air, I am black and blue in the knee and foot department, but ok, and about to go and work out. You aren’t alone in being clumsy. I’m so sorry you’re going through all this and I hope you’re sorted soon and wish you a fast recovery and No Pain. Do you have help in getting through the days? A wrist/hand break is awful. Good luck and I hope this doesn’t delay your trip.
Three years ago I fell on ice - while standing still. Yes clumsy. My shoulder was broken in 2 bad places, leaving a bone shard out into the flesh. It was inoperable, so we waited to see how it would heal and if it didn’t heal properly then I’d need a shoulder replacement. Thankfully it healed well enough that I didn’t need the surgery. I still have limits on my movement but have recovered from most of the frozen shoulder. Maybe I’ll always have the discomfort and limited movement, but I am working on it daily and working with a PT.
Thanks for all your kind wishes and replies. The surgeon reviewing me has decided to stop the Rivaroxaban tonight and operate tomorrow to fix this. Gives me a better window as far as anticoagulation goes and can start again tomorrow evening. I'm happier with this plan and feel OK with this.
