Mary is absolutely right - if you're taking warfarin it's a completely different scenario if you're taking aspirin or heparin. If you'd like a chat please call us on the charity number 0207 188 8217 x
If you are flying economy, do carry a note from your treating doctor, with office letterhead, and signed, explaining your need for a seat with leg room. Get copies, so that if the copy you give to the airline booking desk is lost,( this happened to me!) and your original flight is rescheduled, you will have documentation WITH YOU to prove to skeptical stewardesses that you are not just trying to get a first class seat without paying for it.
I ended up crossing the Atlantic once laying on the floor outside smelly lavatories with my feet propped against the bulkhead. Charming.
This despite the fact that a doctor, seated behind me on this flight, heard me explaining to the stewardess that I was supposed to have been assigned an aisle or front seat to minimize my chances of getting a clot,. The doctor stood up, said loudly to the stewardess, " ahem. Miss? Miss? I work with the doctor who first described the illness she is telling you she has. And she would not know all the names she told you --all the names this illness goes by --if she, in fact, did not have this illness. The danger of her contracting a clot is very real. She needs leg room seating.". The stewardess ignored her. And I got to spend much of the trip laying on the floor outside the loo.
I don't fly much anymore. . .
It's also important to remember that heparin only lasts for twelve hours, therefore, if you have a long haul flight, you may need two injections.
I personally inject myself just before the flight - it works immediately and there might be delays
I am on aspirin and clepidogrel and my doctor recommends a first injection one hour before a more than two hours long flight and a second injection one hour after the flight. I agree this has to be consulted with a doctor.
