I have a question about what causes a banding squeezing sensation around abdomen and left side ribs...like a rope is around me.

Hi

Could be your heart, a clot, pulmonary embolism (PE) or many other things. Check these:

If it were me, I'd call 999.

Hi there, is the pain around your chest or lower down as in abdomen, if so, you definitely need to see your GP, and try and think whether this is happening after eating or any specific activity, and if it gets very uncomfortable or worries you too much no harm in a check up, However if this is nearer your chest area, I would go off to the medical room rather than wait for GP. Thanks for the response. It's around the abdomen and is consistent with MS. I found it under " ms hug " It happens from a spinal lesion. I'll go to see an ms specialist.

If it is 'MS hug', the info in this link and on the site may help you before you can see your specialist.

Thanks for the info.

Hi dk66343

I have the same sensation and when I had a camera down my throat into my stomach they found that I had a hiatus hernia that was protruding through my diaphragm into my chest cavity It looks like I am having problems with my heart because I am clutching my left side but it is actually a hernia that feels like it is strangling my left side under the rib cage. I do not have MS.

I do hope you manage to find out what causes yours and that you find a support group to help you.

Thanks for the info. I thought the same thing, but that was ruled-out. I'm sorry about posting this on a site for Hughes syndrome. I mistakenly thought this was a site for any issue.

You are welcome and in some cases people with MS turn out to have Hughes Syndrome or both.... thanks for paying us a visit, and I hope you find the site that you can use for your diagnosed condition. Mary F x

Just a point of interest, Jumpin and DK and of course generally

I get a similar feeling of the chest being squeezed pretty much a crushing pain - which has and had been mistaken for wind, heart attack and others, I had the camera down into stomach but it found nothing ..... seems I have what is called Vasospastic Angina, where the blood vessels in the heart go into spasm (Can also happen in the oesophagus) and replicate the 'feeling' of a heart attack, and with general well being people wouldn't be too much of a risk, but for Hughes sufferers, can potentially cause clotting. For me I have been lucky, and not clotted. It took a while for this to be diagnosed.

Hope this has been helpful.

Hi Lesley,

It was very helpful to me. I also have Vasospastic Angina .

Mine showed during a stress induced or drug induced stress test. Karen

Karen, you are the first person I have known to have this form of angina, mine can come on at rest, during sleep, sitting, there seems no rhyme nor reason but at its worst, even morphine offers little to no relief of the pain. I use GTN which can help occasionally or for a very short time, but often take 16 sprays before reverting to morphine, when this doesn't work, then it is off to A&E as a just in case, and for pain relief.

I would be interested to hear your experience of it to please

Wishing everyone well

I get a sudden "heart attack " pain! It is excruciating to move and breath. Was taken via ambulance to hospital on gas and air about three years ago. They couldn't find anything wrong and said it was muscle spasms in back? So when it happens now i try and deal with it and wait for it to pass. Its very random and get it at rest. I have ApS and Lupus, haven't mentioned it since as i took it as another lupus symptom. Does this sound something i should tell rheumatology about or is it muscle spans? xxx
