Referral times for treatment of Hep C

Good morning all. I am new here and have some questions.

My husband just been diagnosed with chronic Hep C, it is possible that he had it for nearly 40 years. It did casue serious damage to his liver and at the moment he is treated for Portal hypotension and ascites. My husband doesnt drink.

We had an appointment yesterday with GI consultant in Brighton and were told that my husband will be referred for treatment right away. Becasue we were so shellshocked I forgot to ask what does "right away" means. Is it days, weeks?

I am not sure as everyone seems to be a bit different depending on their own situation. After diagnosis I had to wait 3 months to see if the virus would clear of its own accord, then a fibroscan and a series of blood tests to inform what sort of treatment is best for the strain I have and state of my liver. It was about a month after that that treatment started. So from diagnosis to treatment took 5 months. And from decision to treat to first tablet took 2 months. Good luck with it. I just want it over. Wish I knew how the heck I got it. Shock is the worst

Thank you for your reply. I did manage to speak with the nurse on the ward and consultant. As my husband has chronic Hep C they will discuss his case as a team next Friday and decide what medicine to use, after that it should be no longer than 4 weeks. My husband didn’t know about hep c and dr thinks he might had it for 40 years. His liver is badly damaged, but working at the moment hence the urgency. Hope you are doing well and all the best xx

I hope he starts treatment soon and gets that sorted. My consultant said that most people who have it don’t know they do!

Hi I'm new here, I am usually on the BLT site but joined here to see if I could learn something about long term effects of treatment. I hope your husband was able to get successfully treated for the Hep C virus, l too have cirrhosis from it. Prayers for you both.
