I wish I was one of those lucky people. I was with Dr. T.Gregory Everson at UCH hepatology from day one of treatment. (1995) Back then I was put on alpha interferon and gave myself injections every other day. This drug was HORRIBLE! Instant high fevers, flu symptoms, headache, nausea, ect... I was put in the UCH trials and had 6 months of betaseron, this drug worked GREAT for less than 6 months and we all relapsed after or before the 6 month pull date on this trial. One more round of alpha interferon and my PCP said, "as this drug only keeps your viral load down while on it I want you to consider not using it again. Ok, I listened then found out about the pegalted interferon and ribaviron study and was put on that. Still no sustained results. I stopped treating this until 2004 and tried the Pegasus ribaviron treatment 3 more times, Las time I was put on it fir a year. Again, no sustained results. I was found to have genotype 2, supposedly the easiest to cure?! Well, I guess my body is stubborn as this didn't help once the drug was taken away. Dr Everson promised me he would wait until he hand picked the right drug for me and cure me. November 30th 2016 I had Fed Ex deliver a months worth of Epclusa.
By this time the 25 years of this disease ravaging my body had left me with stage 4 cirrhosis, calcified splendid vein and now calcifying pancreas and chronic pancreatitis. Well, Dr. Everson left UCH in May, 2017 and he saw he after 3 months of post treatment. It was my birthday. He gave me the best gift by telling me "thank you for waiting and trusting me. You show no signs of Hep c"!!!! I wish that no one has to go through what I endured and am left with, a half broken body. I know this disease is on its way to being irradiated and gone. The Hep C depth at UCH keeps getting smaller and smaller. Thank you Dr Everson. Ty for being the Dr at the forefront of the cures for this disease, Ty for finally curing me!
