Lionel’s remarkable story serves as a stark reminder of how sudden cardiac arrest can strike anyone, at any time.
In 2012, Lionel, suffered a sudden cardiac arrest during a flight home from his retirement holiday. With no warning, he collapsed, and by chance, a doctor and flight attendants performed CPR and used an onboard AED, saving his life. The plane made an emergency landing in Faro, Portugal, where Lionel was rushed to the hospital and placed on a ventilator. His wife, was in shock, fearing the worst.
Lionel regained consciousness days later, with no memory of the incident. After receiving an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), he made a full recovery. He now sees his survival as a second chance at life and stresses the importance of AEDs being readily available in public spaces. Lionel is grateful to the people who saved him and emphasises that without the AED, the outcome could have been different. Both Lionel and his wife are determined to make the most of life, cherishing every moment together.
