I have taken 80 mg of Sotalol for many year to control my Atrial Flutter . I have recently read that you should not take sotalol with any dairy products as its efficacy is diluted. Please can anyone educate me more on this . I recently had a bowl of full fat Greek yogurt shortly after taking my evening Sotalol and subsequently had a few hours of spiking heart rate and runs of tachycardia with my heart rate going up to 100 bpm.

sotalol and dairy
Hi cathmary
Dairy products such as milk affect how well Sotalol is absorbed or ingested.
I don’t have any personal experience with this medication I’m afraid, but you’re right in saying that dairy products can interact with Sotalol therefore, should be avoided where possible when taking the medication.
Any real concerns should be addressed by your GP or doctor.
I hope others come by to help with your query.
All the best.
Tos
Sotalol should be taken on an empty stomach as food can effect its efficacy.
Hello Mary. Thank you for your post. That explains why after having oatmeal with milk and dates lately my heart rate spiked to 120 a few times. Dates alone as they contain a lots of fructose also are a trigger for me. I take 80g sotalol twice a day. Thierry
Hello Cathmary, I just changed my medication from metoprolol to sotalol about a month ago. My heartbeat spikes even when I had a glass of goat’s milk two hours before taking Sotalol. I am avoiding dairy products at the moment but will try to reintroduce dairy little by little to see how my body reacts
